8159769 [SCALING BUG] Windows 10 / Intel HD Graphics 4600 - Impossible to get rid of 'Black Borders' problem - Stuck at 'Constrain proportions'

=== Device/Software information ===

32 GB DDR3L-1600 G-Skill RipJaws,

Intel Core i7-4710MQ

Intel HD Graphics 4600

Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M 4GB GDDR5

128 GB Samsung SSD (Boot)

1 TB Samsung Evo 850 (Games)

1 TB Hitachi HDD (Data)

Driver Version: 15.40.4.64.4256

OS Version: Windows 10 Educational

=== Problem Description ===

No matter what settings you choose for your display in Intel HD Graphics Control Panel -> Display -> Basic -> Scaling,

When you launch a fullscreen application the setting will be ignored and it will revert back to 'constrain propostions' when enabling fullscreen, then when you alt-tab to desktop it will go back to your selected mode, then you alt tab to game and it will go back to proportions setting again, making it impossible to get rid of the black borders.

The setting only is applicable in Windows 10 Desktop, doesn't work for fullscreen apps.

It worked good in Windows 8.1, I just upgraded from 8.1 to 10.

In windows 8.1 I could game on any resolution without black borders - a nice, full, filled screen.

I think I have the same issue as the sir here:

Please fix this ASAP or suggest steps to fix.

Problem does not happen without drivers (Driverless) -> Games run in full screen / fill screen mode at any resolution (so this is not a Windows bug).

Don't know where you are finding this. The latest driver updates were on 6/13/2016 for me..

Could you post a link?

If you go to the Graphics section of this forum, there are three sticky threads right at the top. This is one of them.

I have just tried it and it works so far (stretching, that is). However, some games refuse to go fullscreen and you can see the windows border on top. Kinda like this: http://i.imgur.com/GuKPEE7.png http://i.imgur.com/GuKPEE7.png

It also cuts off portion of the bottom screen..

EDIT: Ok, I have managed to fix this problem as well. Had to go to Task manager during the game (Hidden and Dangerous 2 and Morrowind to be exact) and force the game to Maximize from there. I suppose there's some problem where the games do stretch but the window doesn't maximize automatically, giving you a windowed mode.

Thanks for the link!

The update seems to have fixed it for me!

Stretched works fine without the windows border (for CSGO at least).

Looks like latest driver https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26079/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-15-40-4th-Gen-?product=81497 15.40.25.4463 helped some people.

But with my Core i5 4210u all the games still ignore "Maintain Aspect Ratio" scaling option.

Yeah, I am kinda wondering where the fix is as well. I am guessing they probably had some setbacks.

I'm assuming the fix is still nearby. They said "First or Second week of June"

The second week is not yet over my friends.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a solution. Been following this for far too long now to let it go! I was among the first of the people here with complaints about the lack of scaling. Glad SOMETHING is being done about it.

Issues fixed here! I'm with win10stretched - My issue is fixed in CS:GO. The ROOT of me discovering this issue was CS:GO and now the issue is fixed: I am able to play CS:GO in fullscreen mode, 4:3 aspect ratio, 1024x768 resolution, and through Intel's Graphics Control panel have set the scaling mode to "Scale Full Screen" and ticked the box that says "Override Application Settings."

We're kicking it in 4:3 stretched CS:GO again boys, time to throw this up on HLTV and maybe some other places where it's relevant.

And it only took... 10 months, almost a year. LOL.

Regardless, pretty ecstatic that it is fixed, it rendered CS:GO near unplayable for me for the length of the issue.

Thanks to Deathstruck for pointing us in the direction of these almost "hidden" fix.

Tried downloading and says I need to download from vendor. I guess I have to wait for it to get to dell to download and install it on my Alienware 15. Can't wait tired of the black borders!

I think you can actually avoid the whole vendor certificate thing. This is what I did:

Download the .zip version, extract it to some folder and then try to reinstall the Intel driver from device manager, by going to the Graphic's card preferences->Drivers and then tell it to update from a software in your computer - which is pretty much just pointing it towards the said folder with the installer.

At least that's what worked for me on my ACER Aspire laptop.

Got it to work. It did the same thing doing what you suggested so I rolled back one version and then tried it and it let me complete the install. Thanks for the tip Deathstruck!

Bryce@Intel ,

Assuming this release was the one to fix scaling bugs, this might help gamers --but it does nothing for home theater users.

Note my original thread:

This driver does nothing to resolve that issue. All I need, and anyone using a television as their display needs, are those two sliders shown in the dialogue box on the right-hand side (see picture I posted in that thread). Without those, I can't center my display. If I can't center my display, I can't see the Start Button, or some of the system tray. With an HD 4600 graphics setup (Core i5 4590S), this was not an issue. With an N3700, now it's an issue and has been for a year, with promises but no results. The graphics in my N3700 are supposed to be more advanced than the HD 4600, and yet we've moved backwards with newer technology, and an acknowledgement by Intel that it's a problem, with no known ETA. And it seems like if it has been done before, that adding those two sliders is not reinventing the wheel, but adding back something that has been lost.

Well it's been some time in the works, but I'm pleased to formally and finally announce the game scaling issue resolved for WIn10 using 4th, 5th, and 6th Generation Core platforms using driver version /thread/103311 15.40.25.4463. I'm very happy we were able to work around the OS issue to get scaling to work in games now. I appreciate all the patience from you guys and would like this to illustrate that the Intel team here with you are truly your biggest champions, here to raise your concerns and requests and be your voice internally. Any/all positive feedback you have is appreciated and I'll be sure to raise it to the appropriate parties for visibility , it helps me vie for future requests/fixes

That said, for those using Baytrail and Braswell aka ValleyView and CherryTrail platforms on Win7, 8.1, or 10, I wasn't aware there was an issue until recently so the fix is not available yet, though I'm inputting the request and escalating it. More details to come inside those respective threads.
