[9024844] Custom resolution not working

I emailed Intel Customer Support Service and they refer me to this forum because the agent say it will have the correct exposure to intel engineering department. (request # 8001214860)

The problem is Intel Graphics driver for HD 4600 (and presumably others too) have a broken custom resolution for Built in LCD. No matter what setting you put into it, it will always custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity.

I tested it on many different laptop with eDP (embedded displayport) like Alienware 17, Asus G751JM, Asus Q551LN, Lenovo Y50-70, Razer Blade 14, MSI GT60 Dominator Pro, and Gigabyte P34 and they all say custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity.

To establish the fact that bandwidth is not the problem, I tried creating a custom resolution at native res (1920x1080) at 59Hz (default is 60Hz) and it says custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity. To test it further I downscale the resolution to 1600x900 @ 59Hz and it still gives the error so I conclude the problem is with the driver itself.

I tried the oldest and newest driver from the OEM and the one on Intel website and they are all broken.

The problem is NOT ISOLATED on a laptop model or a manufacturer but the Intel Graphics driver itself.

In fact if you verify the problem by testing it on ANY laptop that has an Intel graphics and try to create a custom resolution that is 1Hz less than native (like 59Hz) and it will give you the same error.

So why does it matter? Almost every single gaming laptop that is being released are NVIDIA Optimus Enabled (Hybrid Graphics where Intel Graphics is handling the display) and it prevents people from changing the refresh rate of the display. As an example the LCD panel found on Asus G751JM-BHI7T25 uses LG LP156WF4 SPL1 which is the exact same panel found on Asus G751JY that comes at 75Hz by default, but we cannot change the refresh rate due to broken Intel Custom Resolution even though the LCD panel itself is more than capable to handle it.

Refresh rate is a huge feature as evident on monitors getting released (like BenQ XL2430T, Asus ROG Swift, Acer Predator, etc...) and if you ask any gamer that has tried a high refresh rate monitor they will tell you how much big of a difference it is and because of this issue, any gaming laptop that has Hybrid graphics (Intel Graphics enabled) is a HUGE deal breaker.

[Edit by Bryce@Intel]: Changed title to reflect investigation bug# and title.

Old title: Intel driver is completely broken (custom resolution)

[Edit 10/08/18] *This change to unlock the drivers to allow 3rd party apps to function is checked into all branches of drivers, which means all 'latest' drivers are unlocked. The drivers below are simply the first driver in each branch that were unlocked. Please download the latest driver for your platform, or you can use https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html iDSA to automatically detect what driver updates are available for your system.

Happy Friday/Saturday all,

Great news! This completes the platform support. These drivers enable the use of 3rd party EDID applications for internal and external panels on Intel platforms.

Intel HD 4000 and I can't install the driver on either of my 2 laptops. I have looked into device manager to install it manually and the HD 4000 isn't shown. This needs to be fixed.

I have i7-4800mq with HD 4600. I assumed "4th gen" meant that I would be in the list , but this driver simply doesn't do what it promises. Even 61hz gives strange vertical lines, defenetely not what I've seen in many years of Custom resolutions on desktops. It's like some bandwidth or pixel clock incompatibility

Sadly none of this is working. Drivers installed using the workaround and I'm 100% on correct drivers but no luck. Ive used CRU for years but only with NVidia.

I'm on the

Intel® Atom™ x7-Z8700 Processor

on a GPD win, I just wanna be able to set the resolution of the inbuilt display to a flat 60hz

Cru 1.3 now works on two laptops with haswell cpu, MSI gt60 (90hz fullhd) and clevo p151sm (75hz full hd).

It doesn't work with my skylake notebook. (gigabyte p55w). I forced a higher frequency and after a lot of tries finally got a black screen.

Maybe it will work with the final driver.

Not supposed to work on SKL which is 6th Gen. Looks like it's working as intended for HSW which is great! Thanks for confirming this all and helping others to get it working where it's supported.

So you are not going to release it for the HD 4000? Have I literally been waiting all this time for nothing?

Looks great! I got a successful 90Hz on my panel, 95 and higher gave me lines on UFOTest.

I took a screenshot too:

I hope that others share my success on these awesome test drivers.

I feel like my limit is either going to be 90Hz or somewhere between 90 and 95.

Either way I am more than satisfied with 90, going to be great for my games.

[EDIT]

Turns out I was getting lines on 95 due to bandwidth. I tested it on the LCD Reduced standard and got a successful 95Hz refresh rate.

I took another screenshot too:

Again, I hope everyone else with 4th/5th gen IHD Graphics can enjoy similar or better display overclocks as I am. I have absolutely fallen in platonic love with this driver.

@Bryce@Intel Could you be so kind to share that alpha diver too for Ivy Bridge owners of us who waited for workaround with anticipation and looks like won't have a thing with newer drivers as HD4000 is practically no more supported?

Thanks.

There is one way of increasing Hz on 3rd Gen HD4000. I will create a video of this ingenious hack tomorrow if you need.

The workaround is to create a virtual monitor using built-in windows settings, then duplicate main monitor with virtual, pick the newly created Hz mode of virtual monitor in HD Control Panel and setup the virtual as a main one. It worked on Windows 7 and Windows 10. Tested on MSI notebooks (Ivy Bridge) and other too however results may vary with lesser Hz modes for instance. MSI gained 75, 85 and 100Hz modes. If you lower resolution you get even more.

That method doesn't work for my version of Windows 10. It just says "Didn't detect another display" when I click on "Detect". Also, all the display settings are no longer accessible from the control panel and have been moved to the Windows 10 metro settings.

I downloaded and clean installed the Kaby Lake driver and disabled Windows automatic driver updates, but CRU settings are still not showing up at all. I am using an Nvidia optimus laptop with Intel 620 HD graphics and Nvidia 940MX, hooked up to an external display.

CRU runs smoothly with my old laptop with AMD graphics connected to my monitor, so this is most likely an issue with these drivers.

Any news on getting this to work on skylake?

There is no workaround yet.

The test driver posted does not work for custom resolutions on skylake even if you force it to install. We still need to wait for another update, so close yet so far LOL

Update:

Again I come with good and bad news. Unfortunately the [15.33] branch for 3rd Generation was denied, which means this will only be available for 4th Generation and later products.

The good news is I have a few drivers targeted for the coming weeks. I'll update again as the releases get closer.

So 3rd gen users aren't getting the features that SHOULD be available? I am sorry but "denied" isn't an acceptable answer, I appreciate you helping the 4th gen and above users get their side fixed but denying the 3rd gen isn't an answer.
