Computer is Dell M3800 w i7 & Intel 4600, 16GRAM, 256SSD.
Computer also has nVIDIA driver that can be selectively used. I rarely use it - default is the 4600 card.
I use Dell 3000 USB docking station that uses DisplayLink for multiple monitor support. I get the error whether I'm docked or not.
No problems in Windows 7
Upgraded to Windows 10.
*** Problem: System 'freezes' then I get a notification that the display driver has stopped and then recovered. *** This happens randomly with a frequency about every hour or so.
Upgraded driver through Dell Website (along with BIOS and other drivers). Problem still exists.
Upgraded driver through Device Manager. Problem still exists.
Downloaded latest drivers from Intel website. Uninstalled the previously installed driver. Installed the Intel driver. Install warns that the driver is older than the existing drivers. I installed anyway. Problem still exists.

Upgraded driver through Device Manager. Problem still exists.
Please tell me you have a solution to this. I've looked at other forum entries for this and haven't seen a definitive solution. I'm about to revert back to Windows 7.
Thanks!

This driver crashing issue has been escalated to our engineering team, we are just waiting for any update on this matter. I still do not have an estimate time of resolution.
Intel posts list of known issues and fixes on the driver release notes of every driver download at: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/ Drivers & Software

Thanks Allan. I love the integrity of your company that at least admits the problem! I've had no response from Microsoft.

Computer HP Envy M7 Notebook w i7 Intel HD graphics 520 also Nvida GeForce 940M. Just got this computer 4 days ago. Having same issue as timagrham listed in post above. This is the second computer with this this issue. The first one was the same model I returned it after just about two weeks because of the same issue. Thought it might be just a bad apple but the new computer is exhibiting the same problem with the graphics driver stop responding and recovering. The screen goes black and after minimizing all graphics/picture returns. This computer came with windows 10 home already installed. Have contacted hp and issue is still happening after updating driver, bios, and all other items mentioned in post above. Hope this issue can be resolved. This issue happens randomly, today was only viewing an email and it happened.

Thank you for the information. I am sure our engineering team will release new drives that address this problem, I will report back once I have more details on this matter.

Thanks Alan Please keep us posted as I am having the problem again today!! Just doing something simple like viewing an email causes Intel Display to stop responding and then recover. The screen goes black but by just minimizing the screen the graphics/picture comes back. I talked with HP tech support and they were no help. Intel Graphics driver uninstalled, reinstalled, updated latest driver all were done and still the problem exists.

The only time I get the error message is when I'm playing Microsoft Solitaire's TriPeak game. Totally freezes the game.

Hi Allan,
So where exactly is the list of known issues? If it existed, I would have found it, and therefore would not have wasted hours and hours of my time trying to fix my own issues.

Can you actually confirm that the Intel engineers know about this problem? It's been persistent for MANY months now. I bought my Dell XPS 9530 back in August of 2015. It came with Windows 8.1 and I immediately downloaded and installed Windows 10, and since then have installed windows 10 updates automatically. This error message began appearing only about 6 weeks ago. I've spent hours online with Dell Tech Support. They helped my install the latest driver from the Intel website for my Intel HD Graphics 4600 adapter. Didn't solve the problem. Then they changed the mother board. Didn't solve the problem. This issue is incredibly annoying and I'm losing confidence in Intel's commitment to fix this.

Hi jbkelly,
The basic problem is that the Intel Graphics are packaged for Windows 7,8, 8.1 and 10 in one package and Intel has not even installed and used the product, like a normal User does. My system never had Windows 8 or 8.1 installed and it states exactly what everyone else is complaining about.
I don't think that Intel bothers to change the error messages to reflect the operating system that the Intel Graphics is installed in.

Update: DisplayLink (used for multiple monitors via Dell 3000 docking station) has had another update to their driver as of 12/17/2015 (7.9 M4) and I just installed it. Although I had the Intel error even when not docked, there was obviously some attention required to that driver as well. I'll post an update if this has had a positive effect on this problem.

Update: Nothing worked. I rolled back to Windows 7. I'm happy that my system is working flawlessly. The answer for now is to roll back to Windows 7 at least until there is a fix.

This would be o.k.. but my computer is brand new and came with windows 10 installed. So this would not be a fix for me.

Hi,
I've experienced the same problem as mentioned: lagging (with mouse and sometimes keyboard stutters) on desktop screen. I have Windows 10, Intel i7 4770.
I just registered to share with you my discovery today:
I use a HP monitor with 3 inputs: VGA, DVI and HDMI. The problem with the graphic adapter died and recovered has been happening for a while when I was using VGA and DVI; but I recently purchased an HDMI cable and the horror truly became unbearable. As it turns out, the problem is this HDMI.
Indeed, the driver for this Intel 4600 is already problematic on Windows 10, but it still survives more or less. Only on the HDMI signal processing does it seem to go out of control. Guess I'm still lucky that I can just change signal source and it goes back to be relatively ok.
I hope this helps anybody having this issue while still waiting (in vain) for a fix, either from Microsoft or Intel.
PS.: note that my driver version is dated 18. Nov. 2015, FYI

Altranine - good point. Although I mentioned that I'm using a Dell 3000 USB docking station, I'm using both the DVI (to Samsung) and HDMI out (to LG) ports from the docking station for video. I did experience the problem when directly plugged into HDMI out on the computer itself as well. I'm pretty sure I experienced it even when I didn't extend my desktop.
I think there were other issues related to the docking station as well. My Bluetooth usb dongle for Microsoft keyboard and mouse was plugged into it, too. I occasionally lost communication with it, too. Now I just wish I could remove the nagging "Upgrade to Windows 10" message, now (I know there are hacks out there - tried one - worked for a while - should be able to just shut it off, though). I ramble. So - to conclude - I think I had more than a problem with the Intel Driver - I also had a problem with the docking station drivers, which compounds the problem, troubleshooting, etc.

hi timagraham,
your problem with the bluetooth dongle is also my problem. Connection sometimes has a hiccup and my bluetooth keyboard input freezes for a short moment. I always thought it was because of the 'no name' dongle I have, but now that you mention it here....
as for the nagging update message, I think you can just disable windows update in windows 7 and that thing won't come back. If you know what you are doing online and are careful with usb drives, you should be fine without any update from windows, which, from my humble point of view, is merely more of Microsoft's crap loading onto the system.

I thought that I have broken computer. It turns out I'm not the one.
WIndows 10. New HP laptop with Intel 520 and GeForce 940M.
Sometimes a day get 20 reports that the driver stopped. Sometimes no. Basically I work in a browser.
Have installed all possible drivers from Intel and HP websites.
The problem remains.
Intel team, help us, please!- Mark as New
