ArmA 3: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED seems driver related

Hello,

Ever since ArmA 3 was released as an alpha back in March, it plagued me (and quite a few others) with these apparently random DirectX 11 crashes (either freezing or CTD):

"D3D Error - DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED"

"Display Driver Stopped Responding and has recovered."

A few days ago I, acting on a hunch, installed an old driver (15.28.7.64.2867) from October(?) 2012 and was able to play the game without any crashes in area's/maps that were unplayable before.

Working my way up (I have some, but not all drivers released) I found that the drivers up to 9.17.10.2932 (December 2012) perform flawlessly, while 9.18.10.3071 (March 2013) and later tend to suffer from this issue.

So while installing the latest drivers is recommended as a starting point for every glitch, in this case it is not going to get you anywhere: it seems that every iteration has inherited a flaw that was introduced somewhere during that period (December 2012 - March 2013).

I hope this in some way helps you to tackle this issue, and allows me to have my graphics driver up to date in the near future...

These 'tests' were performed, ceteris paribus, on this machine:

Intel i7-3770K@3500|3900 (HD 4000@1150)

MSi Z77A-GD65 (UEFI: 10.11ß)

32GB Corsair Vengeance@1600

Windows 8.1_x64

All drivers were up to date.

All,

Could you uninstall the Intel graphics driver, retest this and provide your results?

We're now seeing the failure on a GT3 configuration in windowed mode without the Intel driver installed. This indicates this is not an Intel Graphics issue but perhaps an app issue. I'd like to confirm you're seeing the same thing.

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking from me:

How am I going to test ArmA 3 without a driver installed?

At this moment I'm running driver version 4252 (W10_x64), which shows exactly the same behavior as I stated in the opening post.

I have no idea how this can not be a driver issue when drivers older than - and including - 2932 work perfectly while all newer drivers crash within minutes, ceteris paribus.

That said, I'd be more than willing to provide information about the crashes I encounter, problem is I'm not provided with the tools to produce decent debug information..

Thanks for responding Beelzebassie

The Developer said they uninstalled the Intel driver so only the Microsoft default driver was present then rebooted and verified the Intel driver was still not present. They played the game and were still able to see the issue.

I don't have a failing system in front of me to try this. Could you offer any information if these same steps produce the same result for you?

If this fails with the BDA instead of the Intel driver, then it is most likely an OS or game issue. If it was resolved using a previous Intel driver, then we may have had a workaround that had fixed it accidentally or purposely that was since removed or broke. The underlying thing I need verified is if it truly fails without our driver installed. We can go from there.

QUICK UPDATE:

While 'playing' (more like a 1FPS slideshow) for approx. one hour using the standard Windows driver no error did occur.

Installed Intel driver 4276ß, driver crashed within 5 minutes. (The 'Tipping Point' campaign mission will crash before your character reaches the rendez-vous point.)

Also with a clean Windows boot (minimum services/processes) the behavior persists.

Hello, I recently bought ARMA 3 and appear to be another Intel user plagued by this issue.

Namely unavoidable repeating game crashes/freezing at specific points that make missions incompletable and frequent random crashes that make ARMA 3 barely playable in general.

In answer to your question:

With the default Microsoft Basic Display Adapter driver instead of the Intel driver I am able to complete "Damage Control", the last mission of the "Prologue" campaign in the "Learn" menu (though at 1-3 frames per second and most of the audio out of sync).

With Intel's driver ARMA 3 crashes/freezes for me a little before/as/or a little after you land in the helicopter on the outskirts of the town (the exact time depends on graphics settings).

Hello KoningJesper,

I noticed you are using the option that states "Let me pick from a list of device driver on my computer". In this particular case your should select the "Browse" option in order to open the "Browse for folder" option where you could let Windows know where your driver(*inf) path is located on your computer.

Please try this method and let me know of the results.

My game also used to hang in the prologue mission "Damage Control" when you're in the helicopter. It would hang right about when Adam says "Look there". It also hanged in another mission, which I can't seem to remember, it was about a year or so ago. I got through it by installing version 9.17.10.2932 of the driver. But the performance was really low with that driver. I just found this thread so I'm downloading the game again to provide any info you may need. I'm posting the 'Default Level Information' below.

HelloMeinWasser,

Are you attaching the Laptop to a TV?

I noticed Monitor Model: unknown which seems to be a TV/monitor attached to laptop and thus It requires a driver installation which could be found at the manufacturers website.

Please try uninstalling current Intel® Graphics driver and then installing https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25313/Intel-HD-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-10-3rd-Gen-BYT- Download Intel® HD Graphics Driver for Windows® 7*, 8.1*, 10 (3rd Gen & BYT) if issue persists try http://support.lenovo.com/cr/es/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/lenovo-g580-notebook/downloads/DS037352 Laptops and netbooks :: Lenovo G Series laptops :: Lenovo G580 Notebook - Lenovo Support (US)*

Hi Cesar!

No, it's not attached to any external monitor/TV, only the built-in display.

I tried uninstalling the current driver, the Monitor Model was still 'unknown', installing the driver in the first link you posted, the Monitor Model was still unknown, uninstalled it and installed the driver from Lenovo's website, the Monitor Model was still unknown.

But I remembered seeing the monitor name in MadVR (a video renderer) settings: Chi Mei N156BGE-L21 CMO N156BGE-L21

Also, in each step above, I checked ArmA 3. With Microsoft's Basic Display Driver, the game didn't crash or hang in the Damage Control mission or anywhere else, but the performance was awful (2-5 FPS). With the driver from the first link, it crashed as usual. With the driver from Lenovo's website, it also crashed like before.

It works flawlessly with driver version 9.17.10.2932, but the performance, again, is very awful (but better than Microsoft's driver. About 10-15 FPS on the lowest settings, 720p).

So it seems the issue is Intel Graphics specific, with all drivers after 9.17.10.2932 crashing.
