Can I use SPI at ICH10 to access non-flash devices?

My company is thinking to use the SPI interface at ICH10 for configuring a SPI expander chip such as Maxim MAX7317. However, from Intel spec, this SPI interface is used only for flash. Can anyone let me know if this is even possible? Thanks in advance for any help/comment/suggestion!
