Conflict of Intel iGPU and discrete GPU on Windows 11 24/H2

stressedout-tek

Has anyone come across conflict on Windows 11 24/H2 which causes the Intel  iGPU to be disabled?.

Even if enabled in bios the iGPU no longer can be seen to decode video footage such as H264/ H265 (no activity in Task Monitor)

This has been reported on the Adobe Video Community and trying to get to the bottom of what the issue is.

Normally the Intel  iGPU works alongside the discrete GPU to decode footage to share resource load and optimise efficiency.

Windows 11/23 does not have this problem and works normally with the Intel iGPU

Let me try to explain this.

On the Adobe Users community for Adobe Premiere Pro Video Editing Application users - we have noticed that many users updated to Win 11 24h2, then Adobe released a new version of Premiere Pro 25.1.

The earler version of Premiere Pro 25.0  (on Win 11 23H2) used the iGPU in parallel with a RTX Nvidia based discrete GPU.

If you were exporting a video and using the iGPU to decode H264 or H265 - then the NVidia GPU was encoding in parallel (eg to a new codec)  with some work done by your CPU such as a 14900K or 13900K (Intel 770 GPU)

Then it was noticed on Win 11 24H2 that iGPU stopped decoding.

Some users (including myself) spotted this article on Tom's Hardware, but it mainly talked  about Intel Ultra CPU's

https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/z890-motherboards-are-having-instability-issues-with-windows-11-24h2-bios-updates-or-disable-igpud-required-to-update-windows

ASUS also published a technical note about the Z890 chipset and Win 11 24H2, but they said it was possibly affecting other chipsets such as Z690 etc. No info at that at time of writing this.

For Z890 the workaround was to 'disable' the iGPU in BIOS for Win 11 24H2 users. This is not a fix !.

https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1054046/

There is a conflict on some chipsets such a Z890 stopping simultaneous decoding/encoding of Intel iGPU and NVidia RTX GPU such as 4080 ..

Further tests since have revealed that on the latest Premiere Pro release 25.1 the  iGPU will not decode H264, but it does decode H265 - even exhibiting this problem on Win 11 23H2 as well as Win 11 24H2.

Going back to Premiere Pro 25.0 it does decode H264 and H265 in parallel with RTX NVidia 4080 etc. However if you had a Z890 chipset using Win 11 24H2 it is likley your iGPU will have been disabled in BIOS. (See above note from ASUS)

I also raised a case with Microsoft Windows support who told me there are known conflicts with Win 11 24H2 and some Intel chipsets but they were non specific !!.

So there has been much confusion on statements issued on Win 11 24H2 conflicts, plus what also appears to be problems on Adobe Premiere Pro latest release 25.1 using the iGPU (found by the user base).

No manufacturer has given an updated clear statement so far on this, so we, as users of Intel hardware, MS Win 11 operating system and Adobe Video editing application are in the dark on what is going on.

Several users have reported all the above problems in both Desktop High end systems and some Laptop systems.

Not having iGPU and dGPU functional in parallel will causes degradation in performance when working with H264 and H265 footage.

We have reported bug issues to Adobe on their latest 25.1 release for Premiere Pro, since this does not use iGPU to decode H264 fottage like it used to. It does decode H265. Awaiting feedback.

However,  having some form of CLEAR statement on any known issues for Intel chipsets and Win 11 24H2 conflicts for iGPU and dGPU would be also beneficial to reassure customers.

Just a side note: By default, *most* desktop BIOSs will automatically disable the iGFX engine if a dGFX engine is detected. To keep it enabled, a change in the BIOS configuration is necessary. This is not something specific to any one board or system vendor; it is across the industry.
Just saying,

Thanks for your note
I have built all my desktops myself and always go through the Bios to configure it up front ensuring both GPUs are enabled by default. Usually saved as a bios profile.
There appears to be two issues discovered . One is the Adobe app problem ( following up outside this forum) but how the Intel graphics / Windows 11 24H2 release is causing other problems for some users is not yet clear.

Hi Earl,

At this point there are two issues that need to be kept separate I believe.

Issue 1.

Issues concerning Win 11 24H2 and Intel chipsets are those I have read from other users only and from manufacturers.

I'm on Win 11 23H2 and sticking with that for now as there are many confusing reports on Win 11 24H2 and conflicts with Intel CPU's/iGPU's.

I therefore cannot send actual diagnostics relating to Win 11 24H2 as I have blocked it until we see some clear and concise reports coming from Intel and Microsoft on Win 11 24H2 and Intel chipsets ( as per the ASUS announcement, and also MSI I understand)

Issue 2

On a secondary issue that happened in parallel - the Adobe Premiere Pro 25.1  iGPU decoding issue is, we believe at this moment in time a purely an Adobe problem.

However as of Jan 4th 2025 we have no feedback on why the 25.1 iGPU does not get used for H264 decoding on say a 13900K or 14900K CPU. It does however work for H265 4.2.0 material as per users reports on this thread. See also Report by user Rez on this thread.

It is unlikely this second problem is due to Intel hardware issues  as according to user tests Premiere 25.0 works OK on both H264 and H265 4.2.0 for iGPU decoding using Win 11 23H2 and Win 11 24H2.

I hope that clarifies things a bit more on my side and apologies for any confusion caused in earlier reports.

This was due to many users upgrading to Win 11 24H2 as well at the same time which clouded the two issues until further tests were done by users.

Any Adobe users can follow the thread on the 25.1 iGPU issue here :

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/premiere-pro-25-1-igpu-stopped-decoding-my-footage/td-p/15021522

This Adobe forum has no connection to this Intel forum and is only given as information only  to help users suffering from iGPU issues on Premiere Pro 25.1.

Hi Earl,

I have the same problem that stressedout-tek mentioned. Since two weeks ago, when I put this computer together, I never saw any activity for my 14900k iGpu in Task Monitor, even decoding H265! I really have a concern that my iGPU is not working at all.

I confirm that in Premiere Pro release 25.1, the Hardware encoding is not available for H264, but it is for H265. As I mentioned before, there is no sign of iGPU sausage in the Task Monitor during decoding H265.

I use ASUS ProArt Z790-CREATOR WIFI BIOS, which is up to date and has set the default settings.

I included Intel® System Support Utility for Windows*  logs. For your review.

Please advise how I can check to see if the iGPU is alive and how I can make it start working.

Best regards,

Rez

Hi stressedout-tek,

Thank you for sharing this update with us.

I appreciate your effort in sharing the findings that you have regarding to the issue.

We have a recent Graphics driver update that you may try to download to check if there will be changes on the issue.

Here is the link: Intel® Arc™ & Iris® Xe Graphics - Windows*

GPU Version: 32.0.101.6449/32.0.101.101.6256

  • Adobe Premiere Pro Beta (24.0.0.19+) supports Hardware Media Acceleration (Intel QSV).
  • AV1 Encoding is available through the Voukoder plugin.

This issue is no longer seen as of version 24.0.0 build 58. Update to that version of Adobe Premiere Pro or later

Kindly give us an update once you tried the graphics driver version.

Hi Rez1,

You can also try the Graphics Driver update on your device to check if there will be changes on the issue.

Hello Earl,

Thank you for your continued follow up on this issue.

I have the Intel Support & Driver assistant already  installed on my Windows 11 PC so this should pick up the new driver.

I'm not so sure the Intel driver is the issue for the Adobe problem but it may help some users on Windows 11 24H2 with recent reported graphics issues

My CPU is 13900K with Ultra 770 iGPU

I have some other tests to perform first with Premiere 25.1 then will upgrade to this driver to see what results I get.

As stated in my previous posts, H265 decoding is fine on my current setup with Win 11 23H2, but as soon as H264 footage is encountered on the timeline,  the iGPU shuts down. (Both H265 and H264 footage is 4.2.0) 8 bit.

Hi Earl,

Thank you for your reply.

I updated the driver, but there was no sign of iGPU activity in the Task Monitor during decoding H265 in Adobe Premiere Pro 25.1.

I Installed Adobe Premiere Pro 24.6.4 (build 3) , but it is the same as before; there is no sign of iGPU activity. Please see the screenshot.

Since this is a new build and I never saw any activity in the Task Monitor during the day, I am concerned about the actual CPU unit.

How can I ensure there is nothing wrong with the actual iGPU (CPU)?

Please advise.

Best regards,

Rez

Hi Earl

There is ongoing dialogue with users and Adobe about 25.1 as there appears to be an anomaly with this release using iGPU for decoding H264 footage. As we have reported H265 is OK. I am following this on Adobe Forum outside here, but will report back once some firmer conclusions are made just for information to all.

I am using Win 11 23H2 - the latest Intel  xx 6449 graphics driver did not make any difference to the issue.

At this stage I cannot add anymore comments as regards Win 11 24H2 and Intel iGPU issues.

@Rez1on this thread reports H265 not even decoded with Win 11 24H2. I was wondering if the Win 11 24H2 install has set the BIOS iGPU back to disabled in that case? Worth checking !.

Hello stressedout-tek and Rez1,

Thank you for patiently waiting on us.

Upon further investigating and testing, we can confirm that such issue exists in Adobe Premiere (Adobe Encoder also), but it's not related to Intel driver, screen or video setting involving Intel driver.

So, it's best to contact Adobe regarding this issue.

I'm coming back to this thread 3 months on.

Several months on - I am seeing colleagues with on going problems with Windows 11 24H2 and Intel iGPU with Software such as Adobe Premiere and Da Vinci Resolve.

I have not found any coherent information from Intel / NVidia/ Microsoft on these annoying problems that exist and issues fixes.

The problems are related to H265 decode/encode in iGPU under Windows 11 24H2, and potentiall conflicts with NVidia drivers.

Can you search your information and Intel contacts to determine if any recent drivers for processor graphics for CPUs such as 13900 K and 14900K have resolved these issues?.

Also, has there been any updates within Windows 11 24H2 you might be aware of (or your own contacts) resolving these H265 issues?

It is extremely frustrating for the users community to be chasing these problems several months on when it appears the incompatibility of Win 11 24H2 and Intel and NVidia drivers has caused such a mess to user's systems.

Any information as of April 13th 2025 would be useful. Thanks.
