Driver update fails; "an error occurred while registering one or more components"

"Hello, I have a Lenovo X301 laptop running Windows 7. I am trying to update the driver for my Intel graphics card. I went to Intel's site and it recommended an update for the Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset. I download it and try to run it but receive this error: "An error occurred while registering one or more components. Setup will exit." The program then closes.

I should also note that the reason I would like to update the driver is that I have just purchased an external monitor that has a max resolution of 2560 x 1440, and I was hoping that the new driver would permit me to get to this resolution.

Thanks for any help you can provide about how to update the driver successfully.

Hello,

Please be aware that we provide generic drivers that have not been developed or tested specially for your system. Each motherboard, laptop or Original Equipment Manufacturer can add, remove and change features on the video controllers they implement on their systems. Therefore they provide customized drivers to support such changes. So we always recommend using the latest drivers provided directly by your motherboard or Original Equipment Manufacturer.

If you still need to use the generic drivers, you can try to force the generic driver by uninstalling the driver that was provided by your laptop manufacturer, this is done through the Control Panel, go to programs and features. Then locate any entry similar to Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator or video driver and remove it. After that, restart your system and try to install the generic driver again.

Concerning, the issue with the video resolution of the external display you are using, make sure to be using the latest BIOS for the Lenovo system you are using, install the latest driver for the external monitor connected (available on its respective manufacturer's website) and use the latest driver for the video controller. Also make sure to be using a direct connection for the monitor and avoid the usage of adapters or converters that could prevent the system from reading the information from the external display properly. Thank you for the comprehensive reply. In the end, I was able to get the monitor to work without updating the driver, but your reply gives me a great roadmap to use for future issues I may encounter.
