I have a HP Pro machine running Windows 7 with an Intel i5 chip set but cannot set up a second monitor. I cannot access the Extend Desktop option in the Control Panel.
Can anyone explain why and tell me how this can be done?

Thanks for getting back to me.
I have already followed the instructions that you have suggested.
I have subsequently had lots of conversations with HP and they eventually told me that the DVI-D port will not support my 2nd monitor and I should install another graphics card with DVI-I port.
I have done that now but I still can't get the second screen to run. I have installed a GeForce 210 1024MB DDR3 PCI-E 2.0 card which the specification indicates is compatible with the Intel i5 CPU.
It is getting just a bit frustrating.
I have run and saved the dxdiag report but I am not sure if it safe for me to pass this on to anyone else. Sorry but I have not done this before and I am a little cautious.

Hi Peter,
Dxdiag reports do not contain sensitive information that can be used maliciously. The worst case scenario is that you gave your computer an embarrassing name! If that's the case, just blank out the computer name .
The compatibility between your CPU (i5) and GPU (GeForce 210) isn't causing any problems. If your computer is booting, and you are getting a display from your card, then that compatibility is already assured. However, as far as not getting extended desktop with two monitors AND using that card, you will have to have both monitors connected directly to the card. The on-board graphics option is disabled as soon as the computer acknowledges that you have an add-on graphics card. In this manner, you can't plug one monitor into the board, and another into the card. Having the GeForce 210 connected, caused your CPU (with integrated graphics) to become just the CPU (integrated disabled as long as the GeForce 210 is connected).
My suggestion then is to have both monitors you want to use connected directly to the graphics card, update your graphics card driver, and configure extended display through the proprietary utility provided by nVidia.
If I'm just all wrong about your configuration, let me know.

Regarding the new card. I have fitted it to the slot but there is no output and I am still using the on-board graphics card.
When I tried install the driver from the CD it said they we not compatible.
I have connected both monitors to the new card but they are not recognised.
Thanks for the re-assurance about the suitability of the GeForce card but I can't get it to work.

I just looked over your dxdiag. There are a few things to bring up with you;
1. The only installed device being recognized for display is your i5-2400.
2. The driver for your i5 is the generic one, you need to update the drivers here; http://downloadcenter.intel.com/ Intel Download Center
3. The GeForce card (if it is still installed) is not showing up in the report. It's not installed. If it's connected to your machine still and it's not showing up in here, you'll need to download/install the driver for it from nVidia's website.
Let me get this straight though; you are attempting to install two monitors onto your GeForce card and the second monitor is not showing up? If so, you'll need to contact nVidia to provide more in depth assistance with troubleshooting their hardware/software.

Well I am not quite sure what I have done other than to remove the card and refit - whatever both monitors are now working and I have updated the drivers.
