HD 4000 HDMI video-only flicker after Windows 8 upgrade [SOLVED]

Update 2010.10.02: In the end, and skip to the 2nd page for my full description, the issue was resolved by Intel with a new graphics driver and new control panel for the IGP. I haven't had a single flicker and I installed it some time ago. I wish I had the link to share.

-------------

I have the i7-3770K with 3 displays. But currently not all running at the same time. I have 2 monitors that I normally run. VGA and DVI-D. 4x4GB RAM. No GPU card. Only using the HD 4000 for now.

The 3rd display is a 1080p TV via HDMI. When I want to watch a movie or hulu or something, I disable my VGA display and enable the HDMI TV. When I was using Windows 7 x64, I never had any issues. But I have recently upgraded to Windows 8 x64. And now occasionally the HDMI display will flicker black and come right back. It's very fast for me and the HDMI audio doesn't ever get interrupted.

I have since upgraded the HD 4000 drivers straight from Intel. Same issue. I haven't tested removing all be one Ram module. Just annoying that it was working in windows 7 x64 with no issues and now it's having issues in Windows 8.

I built the system almost a year ago and have been using this 3 display setup for at least 6 months. I just upgrade to Windows 8 x64, about 3 weeks ago. The only change has been upgrading to Windows 8. All the same hardware. BIOS version is the latest stable from Gigabyte.

Here are my specs:

Case: Cooler Master HAF-912

CPU: i7-3770K

Cooler: Noctua NH-D14

PSU: Corsair Professional Series AX 850 Watt (AX850)

MB: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H (BIOS latest stable version, F14, I don't want to use beta)

RAM: 16 GB (4x4GB) Corsair Vengence LP CL8 model: CML16GX3M4X1600C8 (Low Profile to fit under huge cooler)

SSD: (Drive C) 240 GB mushkin Chronos Deluxe

HDD: (Drive D) 2 TB 7200 rpm

ODD1: LG Blu-Ray writer HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH10LS30

ODD2: ASUS DVD writer DRW-24B1ST revision c

Video: Still using the HD 4000

Sound: Onboard

OS: Was Windows 7 when I built the PC. Is now Windows 8.

I have an update regarding the flickering issues:

No matter what I tried, I couldn't get rid of the flickers using the 16GB Kingston HyperX Beast 2133MHz kit.

So I decided "what the heck", let's try adding the older 8GB RAM kit in the remaining 2 slots and see what happens.

Since the 8GB RAM kit is rated at 1600MHz @ 9-9-9-24-1T @ 1.65V, that's what I set in BIOS (for the entire 24GB RAM).

Then I booted into Windows 7 x64, and played a few videos....

To my surprise, there are no more flickers, not in videos and not in browser!

So, even though I'm running at lower speed RAM right now (1600MHz), my system is flicker-free, and I have 24GB total.

CPU & iGPU are still over-clocked. This is probably the best solution I can think of.

Intel (and Gigabyte) should still be looking at the issue, and offer a fix for the "beast".

I'll be on the look-out...

Glad that works for you. I had no issues in Windows 7 x64. My issues started after I upgrade to Windows 8 x64.

My system is 4 x 4GB 1600Mhz ram, i7-3770k. Same Gigabyte GA-Z77-UDH5 rev 1.0 board, but I am using the latest non-beta BIOS which is F14.

Where did you get BIOS version F16c ? The latest beta bios I see on the Gigabyte page, is F15q from Jan 2013.

Hi Shawn,

There is a very active community over at TweakTown.com forums, which includes Gigabyte enthusiasts and even representatives. They constantly publish newer BIOS versions than those available officially.

Here are a couple of links to pages with all new (beta) BIOS files:

I no longer have the issue. I didn't reinstall Windows. I didn't update my BIOS. I didn't change ATI drivers. While I have done Windows updates over time, I think it was the recent Intel graphics driver that I installed that did the trick. I also now have a new Intel graphics HD control panel when my 3rd display is active (which is on the IGP).

So it looks like Intel solved this issue with a new driver and not by changing anything at the BIOS level. Works for me. I haven't had one flicker since installing the new Intel driver.

FYI, once you have the new driver and control panel. There is a bug in that new control panel. Instead of that control panel nicely telling you that the Intel controlled display is not active and allowing you to click "OK" to close the message. Instead, it will simply flash the control panel really quickly and make you think there is something wrong. But if you have a display active on the Intel IGP, then the new control panel opens just fine. Hopefully Intel will change this behavior so it doesn't appear broken because there is a lot of forum chatter about that issue as well.

Good to know, Shawn.

Which version is the new driver exactly?

I have installed several newer drivers by now ...

That is the file I downloaded. Here is a link, It is for the Iris and HD series. Also for the latest 4th gen core series. I would make sure you have something actively running on the Intel grphics before installing this.

Thanks, Shawn.

I've just read the release notes of this driver, and among the fixes mentioned, one is of interest:

"Display no longer flickers when running a camera application."

It probably also means no more flickers when playing back video files.

The INF of this driver is actually dated 2013/07/29.

I have a more recent driver v9.18.10.3293, INF dated 2013/09/03.

Available from TweakTown Forums, if you're interested.

I just wish that Intel would have taken ownership of this issue and admitted that it was their issue. And that they were working on it. And it took way too long for Intel to get this fixed. Now I have to go back to the Gigabyte forums and take back some of the comments I made since Intel was pointing the finger at them for the BIOS.

Just great. Finally have a driver from Intel that solves the flickering issues in Windows 8 and now the driver doesn't work at all now that I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 , as if Intel didn't have enough time to make a driver that works with 8.1 at launch.

Hello Shawn Lyman,

You can try this driver:

/docs/DOC-21232 https://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-21232

It is for Win 8.1 but it is also compatible with win 7 & 8.

Xenon2000

I saw that during the 8.1 Preview testing. Which is another reason why there is no excuse for Intel to NOT have the final release driver ready for the 8.1 launch. I will wait until Intel gets there act together. I am using an AMD card for now. So I will wait. But I am very disappointed in my Intel HD video experience so far over the past year with Windows 8 and now 8.1

That is from 10/17 and does not work. I was hoping you meant that Intel released a newer one today.

Follow this thread /message/209500# 209500 https://communities.intel.com/message/209500# 209500

A lot of us are having issues with several Intel HD series systems with Windows 8.1. I was only posting a comment in this thread to show that I am displeased that my Intel driver was only flawless for a very short time. That other thread I linked is about the current driver issue though.

Shawn Lyman,

In fact the link you mentioned above is a thread where you can report issues with the new driver.

Correct, that was my point. and I have already posted there. I also said that my only reason for also posting here, was to explain my dis-satisfaction with having such issues with my HD 4000 in Windows 8 and now 8.1.
