Intel 4600 and 10-Bit Monitor

Hi!

1) Does the intel 4600 support 10-Bit Output (somehow with my NVIDIA GTX 960M) ?

2) How do I switch? In Windows setting it says my Monitor is running at 8-Bit.

The IPS Monitor runs at 60Hz and WQHD at HDMI

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

Regarding your questions, please allow us to explain the following:

For question #1, speaking only about Intel® HD Graphics 4600, the answer is yes. Intel® HD Graphics 4600 controller supports 10-bit color deep.

However, if your system has dual-graphics configuration (either switchable or hybrid graphics), to determine what would be the behavior when the NVIDIA® video card is active/use, the best would be to address this inquiry to the computer manufacturer (OEM) to determine the capabilities when using a discrete video card since they are the ones that designed and integrated all the components on the computer. Your computer manufacturer is the one that handles all the technical details of your specific system model.

For question #2, the Intel graphics driver doesn't enable 10/12-bit color depth by default, and there is no option in our user interface (Intel Graphics Command Center or Intel® HD Graphics Control Panel) to manually change this parameter.

With current driver implementation, the color depth will be set automatically as per the Operating System (OS) configuration. The driver and the OS will automatically enable 10-bit when running full-screen DirectX* applications which content is 10-bit and when using on a 10-bit capable Display.

Note:

Currently, if a 10-bit display is used, the driver will default to 8-bit with Dithering or 12-bit if supported. However, some of these features are only available when using 6th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors or newer platforms.

Back then, Windows® itself was limited to 8-bit hence the driver implementation only switches to 10/12-bit when the content displayed is 10/12-bit and based on DirectX.

Now Windows 10 (after 1703 update) supports 10-bit and we are currently working on improving our Intel Graphics Command Center application to allow manual control for color depth; however, this is a work in progress and we do not have an ETA for the color depth option to be implemented. It is worth mention that this feature would be available for 6th Gen Intel® Core™ platforms or newer since it is one of the requirements for the Intel® Graphics Command Center.
