Hello,
I have an HP laptop (15-u011dx) with an Intel i7-4510U CPU and Intel HD 4400 integrated graphics with the latest drivers (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28662/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-15-40-?product=81497). However, with these drivers, playing some games in fullscreen at any resolution with v-sync turned off causes the screen (mostly the top half or 1/3rd of it) to flicker. Known affected games are StepMania 5.0.12, GT Legends, Half-Life 2, and The Hidden (an HL2 mod). Since all of these titles use DirectX 9 and this issue does not happen on newer titles such as Fortnite or Overwatch, I believe that this is an issue with how the driver handles DX9 content. I understand that DX9 is quite outdated, but many older, popular titles such as the aforementioned Half-Life 2 use it. I would like to be able to enjoy these older titles with my preferred settings with as little graphical glitches as possible. Please let me know if you are planning on fixing this issue.
Thank you,
Pete

Hello Pete L., Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.
Just to let you know, the DirectX* versions supported by Windows* 10 are DirectX* 11.3 and 12. The Intel® HD Graphics 4400 controller works with DirectX* 11.1. Based on that fact, it is expected for the games not to run properly since they are not fully compatible with the platform where you are running them, there is no issue, it is a compatibility problem between hardware and software, you will be able to confirm that information in the links below:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/179113/how-to-install-the-latest-version-of-directx
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005524/graphics-drivers.html
So, in order to try the play the games without the flickering problem, there is a workaround and some suggestions for this scenario that you will find in the following link:
There is no official statement provided by Intel® informing that there will be new graphics driver releases for the Intel® HD Graphics 4400 controller.

Thanks, but playing around with the compatibility settings didn't solve the flickering issue. I read somewhere that installing the newest Windows 7/8 drivers with compatibility mode set to Windows 7 or 8 on the installer .exe could possibly fix this, but I can't find the link. I'm sticking to these drivers for now: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27414/Beta-Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-?product=81497
Thanks,

Hello Pete. You can try WineD3D For Windows, this is wrapper that retranslates DX calls to OpenGL. You need latest Pre-Vulkan 4.5 version. As readme in archive says: copy d3d9.dll, libwine.dll and wined3d.dll in the game's executable directory. Now game will send OpenGL calls to driver, and maybe it will handles them better. I hope it helps you.

Thanks. I might look into this, but the thing is, for games that can be run in OpenGL mode (such as StepMania 5), the flickering issue goes away, but I get lower FPS. I believe that this solution/workaround might result in even lower FPS. I'm sticking to these drivers for now: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27414/Beta-Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-?product=81497

Pete L, You are welcome, thank you for letting us know those results, we are sorry to hear the issue persists after testing the compatibility tool.
At this point, the next thing to do will be to get in contact directly with the developers of the game or with Microsoft* for them to be aware of this scenario and to verify if they have additional suggestions for this matter.

I have the flickering problem too but it doesn't matter windowed or full screen. For me only Fallout 4 has no problems. If I run ''flickering'' games with integrated graphics (intel), the flickering is gone, but on lower settings.

Flickering is a bit generic for a description. But i want you to try something. When it starts to flicker go to All Settings,Display, Advanced Display Setting, Display Adapter Properties. Once there Select monitor Tab select 30 Hertz then select Apply flicker should stop if it dose set Monitor back to normal Hertz and select Apply. Normal is normally the highest number in the drop down box.
I have found that doing this stops mine for doing it.

Yes I know this fixed the issue for many but mine is a notebook and doesn't have that tab in control panel just the 3d settings. I'll make another topic with some videos.
