I am using a clevo based laptop (similar to Sager) running an Intel i7-4710MQ 2.5Ghz - 3.5Ghz Turbo Processor and a nVidia GTX970 GPU and running windows 8.1 64bit OS.
Laptop was running fine last week and I was playing games for about an hour or so. When I quit the game, I was greeted by http://imgur.com/G4iRoek artifacts in the windows desktop. I restarted my game again and I didn't see any artifacts in the game at all. I believe the issue has got something to do with the integrated Intel HD4600 GPU, since no artifacts are present in the game, which uses the nVidia GPU. Rebooting the laptop didn't help, nor did shutting down the laptop and trying it again the next day.
Uninstalling the HD 4600 drivers or disabling the device removes the artifacts, but any games i run will not utilize the nVidia GPU. I've tried all the other driver versions and I'm still getting the artifacts.
As a last resort, I performed the update to windows 10 and I'm still getting the same problem. I'm on driver version 20.19.15.4331
Is this a hardware or a software issue?

Hello KennyC,
Thank you for joining the Intel communities.
Try installing our generic driver you can download it here:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25489/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-15-40-4th-Gen- Download Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows® 10 [15.40][4th Gen]
If this driver does not solve your problem I suggest to contact your system manufacturer for more system updates and to install the graphics driver from your system manufacturer as they have the proper drivers for your system.
Please bear in mind that Intel provides generic versions of drivers for general purposes. Your computer manufacturer may have altered the features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to your driver. Intel recommends you contact your computer manufacturer for the latest system specific updates and technical support information.
Best regards,
Ivan

Hi Ivan,
I've tried the generic driver as well as the drivers from the system manufacturer, but I'm still getting the artifacts.
Is there any other option I can try?
Thanks.
Best Regards,
Kenny

Try uninstalling the driver and restart your system then reinstall the driver again.

Also, I suggest to go through Windows update and install all the update available and to access your system manufacturer website and update all of the drivers available for your system the BIOS.

Other thing that you can try is the following:
Uninstall both drivers our Intel driver and the NVIDIA, restart your system and then install the Intel driver first and then the NVIDIA driver, restart your system after every driver installation (It will prompt you to do it).

Hi Ivan.
I've done a fresh install of Windows 8.1 (which came with the laptop) and installed the drivers from the accompanying CD and I'm still getting the graphical artifacts.
I'm thinking it could be an issue with the HD4600 portion of the CPU. What do you think?

Did you install the Intel® HD graphics first? If not, try uninstalling them and do it that way as I mentioned above.

Yes, I've also followed the driver installation procedure according to the manual, when I did the fresh install of Windows 8.1
Chipset drivers -> Intel video drivers -> nVidia drivers

I get the error message that the system does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software.
The download page states that the driver only supports Windows 10 for 4th generation Intel Graphics. It doesn't work as I'm on Windows 8.1

The driver is supported for Windows 10/8.1/7 as you can see on the link I provided.
Try uninstalling the other driver and install this one.

Hi Ivan,
I've just heard from the laptop manufacturer that it's the Intel CPU which was causing the graphical issues I was experiencing.
Thanks for your help.

Thank you for that information and I'm sure they will be able to help you better as they are more familiar with your system manufacture and how all the components interact with each other.
Best wishes,
Ivan
