This is what happens to the app icons whenever I close and reopen my Lenovo laptop or wake the screen when it has powered off.
The drop shadows around the icons turn completely black and will not correct themselves until I restart the application.
Any suggestions for correcting this issue?

Since this is an OEM device, the recommendation is to download and install the drivers directly from the manufacturers website.
This is to avoid you loosing any special feature for your device that would not be available in the generic graphics drivers from Intel®.
Here you can find the generic drivers for Intel® HD Graphics 5500 for 5th Generation Intel® Core™ Processors:
Just make sure you select the correct OS and version (32/64-bit.
