Hello everyone!
When I try to watch 4K videos in a browser (YouTube or other streaming sites), playback is extremely laggy, unless I lower my memory frequency to 5600 MHz.
I am using the latest Intel display driver and the latest F21a BIOS (April 2026) for my Gigabyte AORUS Z890M ELITE motherboard. My OS is Windows 11 25H2.
Why is Intel hardware video decoding so slow?

Hello zcolor,
Thank you for reaching out to the community forum.
Thank you for providing the system details and the Task Manager utilization summary. I want to apologize for the frustrating experience you are having with severe lag and 100% GPU video decode utilization while trying to watch 4K videos.
The data you provided confirms that your Video Decode engine is completely maxed out at 100%, which is highly unusual for modern Intel Xe Media engines. Because this behavior stops when you lower your memory frequency to 5600 MHz.
Since you have already updated your system to the latest 32.0.101.8801 driver, we need to ensure there is no corrupted driver residue causing this conflict, and gather deeper system telemetry. Please try the following steps:
1. Perform a Clean Driver Installation via DDU: Even with the latest driver installed, overwriting older files can leave behind corrupt registry entries. Please check the link for Reference:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000091878/graphics.html
2. Lock the Ring Ratio in BIOS (To Keep High RAM Speed): If you want to keep your RAM running at its full XMP speed without video lag, you can manually limit the internal fabric clock so it doesn't desynchronize:
- Reboot into your Gigabyte BIOS and switch to Advanced Mode (F2).
- Navigate to the Tweaker tab > Advanced CPU Settings.
- Locate Ring / NGU (Next Generation Uncore) Ratio and change it from Auto to a manual multiplier (keeping the fabric at or below 3000 MHz).
3. Request for System Information (SSU): To help us in investing could you please generate and send us an Intel SSU log (Network tab should be unchecked)? Please check the link for your reference:
Intel® System Support Utility for Windows*
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to get this fully resolved for you. Please let us know how the DDU clean installation goes.
Thank you for your time and cooperation. I look forward to your update.
Best regards,
Nikhil

Hello zcolor,
I hope you are doing well.
I am writing to follow up on the issue regarding high GPU video decode utilization and lag during 4K playback. I wanted to check if you had the opportunity to perform the troubleshooting steps we previously shared.
Specifically:
- Were you able to perform the clean driver installation using DDU?
- Did you try adjusting the Ring / NGU ratio in the BIOS while keeping your memory at higher speeds?
- Could you share the Intel SSU report (with the Network tab unchecked), if not already provided?
Your update and the requested information will help us further investigate the behavior and work towards a resolution.
If you have any updates or if the issue persists, please feel free to share the results with us. We are happy to assist you further.
Thank you for your time and cooperation. I look forward to your response.
Best regards,
Nikhil
