Multiple Displays with iGPU and external GPU

Hey all,

I have a hard one for you. First of all, let me introduce you to my current setup:

I'm running a DELL Precision 3060 Workstation with an Core i7 8700 (non-K), 64GB of RAM and an RTX3060 Super. This is a pretty nice setup with decent performance for my work. As monitors I have the following:

1x Philips 1440p Ultra Wide

1x Samsung Curved FHD

4x DELL UltraSharp WUXQA (1920x1200)

The DELL Displays Support DisplayPort Pass-Through, so you have an Input and an Output. This works fine with 2 Displays in a Daisychain.

The Issue:

I can't use all displays at once. The 3060 Super supports 4 displays, which I can confirm - I can connect and use for example 3 DELL Displays + the Philips one. The Intel UHD630 Graphics does support two displays perfectly fine. And you can use both graphics at the same time perfectly fine once you enable onboard graphics in the BIOS. It looks like there are only some combinations that work perfectly fine:

- Philips (RTX), Samsung (RTX) + 3x DELL (1/2 and 2/1 on iGPU/RTX)

- Philips (RTX) + 3x DELL (RTX and all combinations with up to two on iGPU)

- 4x DELL on RTX and up to two on iGPU

Anything less than above combinations works fine too. Nothing changes when I use daisychain on DP for up to two displays or connect them indivudually. Another weird thing I noticed, whenever I connect the forth display to the iGPU, the DELL Displays connected to the RTX stop working completely if there is any other display connected. However, if its only DELL Displays it works perfectly fine.

I thought it may be related to a "max resolution" that is supported in my scenario, but the combination of Samsung + 4 DELL (not working) has less total display points than the combination of 3x DELL + 1 Samsung + 1 Philips (which is working) so that can't be the case. Also I am perfectly within the native and official limit of each graphics chip. I'm really confused how this can be the case... I really hope you guys can suggest some options to me.

p.s.: drivers are up to date and no, all my cables are confirmed working :DD

Cheers

Philipp

Hello trueJP,

In order to better assist you, please provide the following information:

  • By any chance are you able to provide the model of the Phillips and Samsung monitors?
  • Can you confirm the model of the Dell monitors is the Dell U2415? If not, please confirm the model. I searched for DELL UltraSharp WUXQA, but got multiple results.
  • What resolutions and refresh rates are you running on the monitors on a configuration that works?
  • Regarding the following two combinations:

- Philips (RTX) + 3x DELL (RTX and all combinations with up to two on iGPU)

- 4x DELL on RTX and up to two on iGPU

Are all 6 monitors working on these two combinations?

As well, download the Intel® SSU https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows-

Open the application and select "Everything", click on "Scan" to see the system and device information. By default, Intel® SSU will take you to the "Summary View". Click on the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View". To save your scan, click on "Next", then "Save". Please attach the file to your reply.

Hey Steven,

Thanks a lot for your efforts! Here are the Display Models:

- Samsung S27E500C, 1080p@60Hz

- Philips 345E2AE, 3440x1440@60Hz / 75Hz (tested both)

- DELL U2421E, 1080p@60Hz or 1920x1200@60Hz (tested both)

The "up to two" was a bit misleading, sorry. What I meant is that the monitor combination for example with 4 DELL Displays work with 4 Displays on RTX & 0 on Intel, 3 on RTX 1 Intel, 2 RTX and 2 on Intel Graphics. All 6 Monitors work in no configuration at all. The max is 5 Displays (Samsung, Philips and 3x DELL, no matter on which graphics I am running each individual monitor). On the Tower I am using the built-in display port connectors to run the connected displays of the Intel Graphics. Please let me know if I can provide you any further details!

Regards

Philipp

So, you are saying that you can run with four monitors connected to the RTX card and one monitor connected to an iGFX DP connector but that, if you attempt to run with four monitors connected to the RTX card and two monitors connected to iGFX DP connectors, it does not work?

If this is the case, it makes no sense to me. The hardware is separate, the drivers are separate and one should not limit the other. That is, you should be able to run with seven monitors connected (4x RTX and 3x iGFX, though this may, depending upon your hardware configuration, require DP daisy-chaining or MST Hub (DP-to-2xDP or DP-to-2xHDMI) adapter usage).

Have you run any configuration that connects three monitors to the iGFX engine?

I wonder whether the BIOS is implementing a 5-monitor limitation. Have you asked Dell about this?

Hey Scott,

thanks for your help. The iGPU is indeed supporting 3 displays instead of two as I previously thought; The mainboard has only two DP Ports tho. Using DP Daisy Chain I was able to connect three DELL Displays to the iGPU (working). The combinations are still the same, I can't use all six monitors at the same time even when I connect three of them to the onboard graphics. All my DELL Displays have a built-in DP Daisychain, which is working for up to two displays in a row.

I have not yet talked to DELL about this, I will double-check the BIOS for any settings even though it would be pretty odd to implement such a limitation inside a Workstation. I know for a fact that a similar DELL Tower is being used at my work to run a six display configuration for DevOps. Driver Down- and Upgrading did not work for me by the way.

Open to any new suggestions!

Philipp

Hello trueJP,

Please perform the following steps:

  • Connect 3 monitors to the iGPU as you are doing and gather a graphics report by following these steps:

On Windows, look for the Intel® Graphics Command Center > Go to Support > Click on System Diagnostic > Click on Generate report > Save the report as a .txt file and attach it to your reply.

  • Even though we recommend using straight connections, please test with a docking station/dongle/adapter if available instead of Daisy-chaining. This would help us to isolate the issue.
