Performance regression on most recent drivers for Windows 10 2004?

Upon conducting regular benchmarking of the Intel HD 620 graphics on my i3-7020U HP-240-G6 system, I have noticed significant performance regressions on the official Windows 10 2004 (May 2020 update) supporting drivers, specifically versions 27.20.100.8190 and 27.20.100.8236 (beta). The performance degradation did not exist on the Windows Update installed driver version 27.20.100.7988.

 

The tool used for benchmarking was AIDA64 GPGPU test, version 6.25.5400. The results for driver version 27.20.100.7988 were under Windows 10 build 19041.207, and the results for both 27.20.100.8190 and 27.20.100.8236 were under build 19041.264.

 

The drivers were updated using Intel's recommended procedure of turning off internet access, uninstalling drivers from Device Manager (marking "delete driver files", until Basic Display is shown), rebooting and installing from the .exe driver package.

 

The system was set to "High performance" mode, and Intel's Control Panel was adjusted to "Maximum performance" in all tests. No other programs were opened and CPU / GPU utilization was at 0%. All variables were consistently the same. The laptop was plugged to an outlet in all tests.

We would like to update the thread and inform you that we conducted additional tests regarding this behavior.

 

We tested using the same hardware in our previous tests, we used the latest Windows® 10 release Build 19041 (May 2020 Update, version 2004) and using Intel® HD Graphics 620 driver version 27.20.100.8280. It is worth mentioning that we performed a clean installation of both the operating system (OS) and the graphics driver, and during the tests, we also set the system to "High Performance" and no other tasks or apps were running.

 

The outcome of the last tests is that we could not reproduce the issue you reported. Performance doesn't degrade on AIDA64* with any of the drivers you pointed not even under Windows® 10 Build 19041 (version 2004).

 

This is the outcome using Windows® 10 version 2004 and graphics driver 27.20.100.8280:

 

  • Single-Precision FLOPS >> 381.9 GFLOPS
  • Double-Precision FLOPS >> 95.49 GFLOPS
  • 24-bit Integer IOPS >> 127.2 GIOPS
  • 32-bit Integer IOPS >> 127.1 GIOPS
  • 64-bit Integer IOPS >> 15.03 GIOPS
  • AES-256S >> 1061 MB/s
  • HA-1 Hash >> 3929 MB/s
  • Single-Precision Julia >> 102.5 FPS
  • Double-Precision Mandel >> 29.91 FPS

 

 

Analyzing the results, they have only minimal or even no variation. Having said that, we kindly recommend you to address this behavior to your laptop manufacturer (OEM) for further investigation on their side.

We would like to update this thread and share details regarding the steps we performed.

 

We understand you tested all the drivers with Windows® 10 Build 19041 (May 2020 Update, version 2004). It is worth mentioning that while we were conducting the tests, the Windows® 10 Build 19041 was still in the Insider™ Preview status. Insider™ versions are created for testing and we cannot guarantee its proper functionality and any issue on an Insider™ version should be reported to Microsoft® since this is an open software testing program by Microsoft.

 

Having said that, we want to mention that we tested this in our lab using Windows® 10 Build 18363 (November 2019 Update, version 1909).

 

We tested this using the following hardware and three different drivers:

  • Intel® Core™ i5-7200U Processor.
  • Intel HD Graphics 620.
  • Memory RAM 8GB.
  • Windows 10 Enterprise Build 18363
  • AIDA64* Extreme software (AIDA64 GPGPU)

 

These are the results we had testing three drivers:

 

1- Driver 26.20.100.7985

  • Single-Precision FLOPS >> 382.4 GFLOPS
  • Double-Precision FLOPS >> 95.50 GFLOPS
  • 24-bit Integer IOPS >> 127.2 GIOPS
  • 32-bit Integer IOPS >> 127.1 GIOPS
  • 64-bit Integer IOPS >> 15.11 GIOPS
  • AES-256S >> 1061 MB/s
  • HA-1 Hash >> 3920 MB/s
  • Single-Precision Julia >> 102.5 FPS
  • Double-Precision Mandel >> 29.91 FPS

 

2- Driver 27.20.100.8190:

  • Single-Precision FLOPS >> 382.0 GFLOPS
  • Double-Precision FLOPS >> 95.52 GFLOPS
  • 24-bit Integer IOPS >> 127.1 GIOPS
  • 32-bit Integer IOPS >> 127.1 GIOPS
  • 64-bit Integer IOPS >> 15.11 GIOPS
  • AES-256S >> 1061 MB/s
  • HA-1 Hash >> 3923 MB/s
  • Single-Precision Julia >> 102.4 FPS
  • Double-Precision Mandel >> 29.92 FPS

 

3- New Test driver:

  • Single-Precision FLOPS >> 382.0 GFLOPS
  • Double-Precision FLOPS >> 95.51 GFLOPS
  • 24-bit Integer IOPS >> 127.2 GIOPS
  • 32-bit Integer IOPS >> 127.1 GIOPS
  • 64-bit Integer IOPS >> 15.12 GIOPS
  • AES-256S >> 1061 MB/s
  • HA-1 Hash >> 3905 MB/s
  • Single-Precision Julia >> 102.5 FPS
  • Double-Precision Mandel >> 29.91 FPS

 

 

After analyzing the results, we can see that during the tests and different drivers, there is only minimal or even no variation in the results. During the tests, we also set the system to "High Performance", no other tasks or apps were running and we performed  Clean installation of the graphics driver.

 

Also, the driver that you reported is working fine, version 27.20.100.7988, it is not available in https://downloadcenter.intel.com/. Since you mentioned this is a driver installed through Windows® Update, it seems to be a customized driver for your specific computer and/or for the Windows® 10 Insider Preview version on your system.

 

It is worth mentioning that we provide generic graphics drivers. On the other hand, Computer Manufacturers (OEM) drivers are handpicked and include customized features and solutions to platform-specific issues.

The driver or software for your Intel® component might have been changed or replaced by the OEM and we recommend using the customized drivers provided by your OEM so you don’t lose features or customizations.

 

At this point, the behavior and results you got seem to be related to driver customization or related to the Windows® 10 Insider™ Preview version.

Thank you for looking into my report with such attention and for getting back to me. I appreciate it.

 

Well, as of the end of May, Windows 10 May 2020 (2004) is officially RTM. As a means of eliminating any possible bugs, I downloaded the RTM ISO directly from Microsoft's website (not the insider one) and reinstalled it on my laptop.

Before reinstalling Windows, I got in touch with my local HP support via telephone and asked about custom OEM Intel Graphics drivers. The representative said that, as far as he knows, the GPU drivers for this laptop have no customization and that I should be ok installing the latest version from Intel's Download Center.

 

So, I reinstalled Windows 10 with no Internet connection, I installed chipset drivers, etc., etc., and installed Intel's 27.20.100.8190. I went online, installed Windows updates (I'm on build 19041.264 now) and ran AIDA64 GPGPU benchmark. I'm attaching the result here.

 

As you can see, I consistently get lower results now with newer WDDM 2.7 drivers.

 

I could report this to Microsoft, but, as a consumer, I'm highly unlikely to get any attention from Microsoft. If you can internally escalate this issue to them, I think you would get actual results.

Thank you for putting the time into testing this behavior. I appreciate your good will.

I understand your results suggest there must be some issue with my laptop, specifically OEM-customizations to the graphics drivers.

As this is beyond your reach, I will forward this thread to HP support, although I have already contacted them and the representative said there were no customizations to my laptop driver that he knew of.
