Sound over DisplayPort question

Hi all.

I have HP Compaq 6000 Pro MC desktop. As far as I understand it has Intel Q43/45 chipset and therefore integrated video. I bought a new monitor with DisplayPort and audio support throug DisplayPort (ViewSonic VG2239m-LED). So now I have a question - can I play sound over DisplayPort? I did not manage to play it. So I am a bit confused and I can not understand what is wrong. The problem is in my integrated video? It does not support audio over DislayPort?

I did not find any information in chipset overview. Only information about DisplayPort and DVI support. Does i mean it supports only video but not audio? The only solution is to change my video card, right?

Hi IRQ,

DisplayPort does in fact support Audio as well as Video. What display adapter driver version do you have?

If you right click your sound panel from the taskbar -> playback devices. Right click the white space and select the option for "Show Disconnected Devices" and "Show Disabled Devices". Do you see an option there for "Digital Audio (HDMI)"? If you do, right click that device and select the option for "Set as default device".

Let me know the above information.

Thanks,

-Nic

I know DIsplayPort supports audio playback. But does my desktop support it? Probably my integrated video does not support it. Or probably it depends on some other hardware that does not support audio in my current configuration.

I'll show screenshots a bit later, thanks for the answer.

Ok, I updated some drivers: audio, video. Installed drivers for chipset from HP site. Nothing happens. No new devices. Here are some screenshots:

Realtek driver GUI:

Monitor is connected with DisplayPort cable and common 3.5 jack. Monitor plays sound only if AUDIO IN is selected. If I select DisplayPort - no sound in monitor speakers.

Screenshot from control panel (playback devices):

No DisplayPort devices here.

My drivers should be the latest, I updated them recently:

Again I can not understand what is missing - hardware or software. Here is my post on HP forum, there is some more information about my hardware:

Thanks for the screenshots! Can you also provide a dxdiag report for me to look at?

Thanks,

By the way my desktop's DisplayPort is marked as dual-mode (++) if it can be usefull. What about monitor - I do not know.

Your machine is using what's labeled as "Default System Bios", which may mean that it's never been updated. You can find the download for your system here; http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=4024463&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=4024462&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4060# 120 http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=4024463&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=4024462&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4060# 120

You're currently using one of our Intel generic drivers as opposed to your OEM's. You have version .2555 while your OEM only has .2413 posted. However, there may be features not working (and it's possible HDMI audio is one of them) by using a driver other then the one tailored for your machine by your OEM. I would suggest at least giving that one a try to see if it resolves your issue.

Try that BIOS update and possibly installing your OEM driver. Let me know how it goes!

Thanks,

-Nic

I will check my BIOS but if I dont mistake I have already updated it. But I do not remember when I did it. Probably there was one more update after my flashing.

What about driver - you suggest installing an earlier version of driver? From HP site? I can not say what version of driver i had. But as fas I as remember I installed both HP's version of driver and the latest one from Intel site.

I'll try, ok.

I updated Intel(R) Management Engine Firmware Update Tool. Also:

1) rollbacked video driver:

2) checked BIOS but it says I have latest one:

Warnings say that availbale version is not newer tan existing. Probably I installed some custom BIOS but I'm not sure. I think I updated BIOS from HP site.

Still no new audio playback devices. No sound throug DP.

Today I tried to install driver manually. I managed to replace Realtek HD Audio driver with Intel Audio Display driver bit still no luck - driver reports code 10 - can not start.

I think more and more that my integrated videocard does not support audio over DisplayPort. Probably only over HDMI. I can not check this.

Can you provide your dxdiag information for review please?

(Start -> Run -> dxdiag -> Save All Information).

Thanks,

-Nic

I have already saved it. Link above http://files.mail.ru/CSENQT http://files.mail.ru/CSENQT contains dxdiag information (32 and 64 bit info). Also you can check my HP post.

I think you were right earlier when you said you had a custom BIOS. Looking at the HP support website for your computer, I'm only seeing the latest BIOS update dating to April of 2011 (not June).

Here's the link to the BIOS I found;

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=4023815&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=4023814&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4061# 120 http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=4023815&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=4023814&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4061# 120

It's not a /newer/ version compared to the one you're using, but it might be the right one. Give this one a try and let me know if there's any improvement.

Thank you,

-Nic

By the way HWInfo shows another BIOS date:

You couldn't flash the BIOS? Or you did and the HDMI is still a no-go?

I flashed BIOS successfully. The utility even warned me thah my current version is 2.02 and I do need to udate BIOS. But I flashed it one more time. And still no result.

The only that is strange - BIOS date differs from BIOS date on HP's site. I flashed with that BIOS.
