Surface Pro 2, Display Port 2.1, Samsung U28D590 Combination Not 4K

I cannot seem to get Microsoft Windows 8.1 to recognize a higher resolution setting.

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 with a Surface Docking Station with a miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort 2.1 cable connected to a Samsung U28D590 Ultra High Definition 4K monitor. When I try to adjust the resolution of Windows 8.1 to 3200 x 2000 @ 60 Hz or 3840x2160 @ 30Hz, based on the Surface Pro 2 has an i5-4200U processor, which supports the Intel® HD Graphics 4400 which is specified https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/quick-reference-guide-to-intel-processor-graphics here, in the Display and Audio Features Comparison. I expect to have the ability to display these resolutions, but the maximum resolution allowed on the "Display Settings" screen is "2560 X 1440 @ 60 Hz".

1. I confirmed that the "Devices" > "Project" setting is "Second Screen Only".

2. I confirmed in "Control Panel" > "Display" > "Resolutions" that the second screen is "U28D590".

3. I confirmed the graphics driver is the "Intel (R) HD Graphics Family 4400", released on "3/7/2014", version number "10.18.10.3496"

4. Under Driver Properties, the List All Modes only shows "2560 by 1440, True Color (32 bit), 60 Hertz" as the maximum resolution out of all of the supported modes.

This may be related to this thread, but the Surface Pro does not have the same processor discussed on the Intel forum here.

Hi Brian_L,

I am sorry you are having this problem but let me help you.

There are some troubleshooting steps I want you to try:

  1. Update your graphics driver to latest version. Here you can get it:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23885 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23885

  1. Test a different DP 1.2 cable with better quality.
  2. update the BIOS in your computer to latest.

If you have problems installing the graphics driver from our side, try the steps mentioned here:
