System freeze when resizing GPU-accelerated app windows in hybrid graphics mode

Hello,

I am experiencing a stability issue that occurs only when the laptop is running in NVIDIA Optimus mode (Intel iGPU owns the display pipeline and the Intel graphics driver is active).

When I resize the application window of GPU-accelerated apps such as Blender or Unity, the system freezes for about 30 to 60 seconds and then recovers. After recovery, Reliability Monitor logs LiveKernelEvent, Code 141.

If I switch to Ultimate (dGPU-only / MUX) mode, everything works normally. In iGPU-only mode, it also works normally. The problem appears only on the hybrid / NVIDIA Optimus display path.

Display path clarification:
On this system, when MUX is not enabled, the internal laptop display is connected through the Intel iGPU, and the NVIDIA dGPU renders through the Intel-owned display pipeline (classic NVIDIA Optimus architecture). In other words, the dGPU output to the panel is routed through the Intel graphics driver, not directly to the display.

Important finding:
If I uninstall the Intel graphics driver and Windows falls back to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the issue no longer occurs, even while using NVIDIA Optimus mode. The freeze happens only when the Intel GPU driver is installed and active, which suggests the problem is related to Intel’s display driver behavior during window-resize events in the Optimus pipeline.

For now, my only workaround is to stay in Ultimate (dGPU-only) mode, but that keeps the dGPU active all the time and drains the battery much faster, so it is not a practical long-term solution.

Things I have already tried:

- Multiple NVIDIA Studio driver versions (oldest supported to latest)
- Default ASUS OEM Intel iGPU driver and the latest Intel Arc driver
- Disabled Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
- Changed various NVIDIA Control Panel and Windows graphics settings
- Tested different TDR delay values
- Rebooted after each change

The issue is still reproducible.

How to reproduce:

1. Switch the laptop to NVIDIA Optimus mode
2. Open Blender or another GPU-accelerated app
3. Manually resize the application window multiple times
4. The system freezes for ~1 minute, then recovers, and a 141 event is logged

I would like to know whether Intel can help investigate this issue, or if anyone else with an Intel Ultra + RTX laptop using NVIDIA Optimus (iGPU-routed display path) can reproduce the same behavior.

System information:
- Laptop model: ROG Strix Scar 16 G635LW
- Operating system: Windows 11 Pro 64-bit (Build 26200)
- Processor: Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX
- dGPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU
- NVIDIA Driver: 32.0.15.9144
- Intel Graphics Driver: 32.0.101.6790

Thank you.

Hello,

Great news! The Intel® Graphics Driver 32.0.101.8425 (released on 1/20/2026) has successfully fixed this issue. After extensive testing, I can no longer reproduce it.

Many thanks to the Intel team responsible for this fix. I am endlessly grateful.

Hello Rob1561,

Thank you for posting on Intel Community Forum.

To address the issue effectively, please share the additional information below.

1. Do you have external monitors connected, and if so, do they exhibit the same behavior?

2. Does the freeze occur immediately upon resizing or after a certain amount of resizing?

3. Does the issue occur when plugged in vs. on battery power?

4. Are there any temperature spikes during the freeze events?

Additionally, to have a better understanding of your system configuration and components please generate a complete copy of the System Support Utility (SSU) report. Please follow instructions here and send the report - How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows*

I look forward to your response.

Best regards

Thanks for the reply.

1. I don’t have an external monitor available to test at the moment.
2. The freeze doesn’t always occur immediately. It typically happens after about 2–10 seconds while I am continuously resizing the window (holding the mouse and moving it back and forth).
3. The issue occurs both on battery and while plugged in.
4. There are no temperature spikes before, during, or after the freeze.

During testing I also noticed brief graphical glitches inside the application window once the freeze occurs.

As an additional note, I also tested Intel Graphics Driver 32.0.101.8331, but the issue persists.

I’m not able to share the full SSU report for privacy reasons, but if you need any specific system details, let me know and I can provide them individually.

Hello Rob1561,

Thank you for providing the SSU report, I truly appreciate the time you took to gather and share this information. Based on the details reviewed, there are a few possible factors that could be contributing to the issue you’re experiencing. To further troubleshoot, please follow the outlined steps below.

1. Update the BIOS to latest version 327

2. Update the NVIDIA graphics driver to the latest version V32.0.15.7665 and ensure that you use DDU

It would also be helpful if you can share a short video clip demonstrating the issue so that we can have a wider view.

I look forward to your response.

Hello Jed,

Thank you for the suggestions.

I already have BIOS version 327 installed. I used DDU to clean-install the latest NVIDIA OEM driver (V32.0.15.7665), and I repeated the process for the Intel Graphics Driver (32.0.101.6790). After reinstalling both drivers and rebooting the system, the issue still persists.

This behavior occurs in pretty much every NVIDIA-accelerated (GPU-rendered) application I’ve tested, not only in a single program.

I’ve recorded a short video demonstrating the problem so you can see it in action:

Quick update:

I’ve just performed a clean installation of Windows 11 25H2 (tested entirely offline, without an internet connection) followed by clean installs of the NVIDIA graphics driver (V32.0.15.7665) and the Intel Graphics Driver (V32.0.101.6790). I tested offline intentionally to rule out the possibility of background updates or network-related services affecting the behavior.

I also installed several GPU-accelerated applications such as Blender, etc. for testing. Unfortunately, the issue still occurs, the system freezes again when resizing the application windows.

Hi  Rob1561,

Thank you for your patience as we investigated this issue further.

After a detailed review, we found that the problem may be related to customizations implemented by the OEM. With this in mind, we recommend contacting Official Support | ROG Global for further assistance.

Please note that we will now proceed to close this thread. Once closed, it will no longer be monitored by Intel. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Best regards,

App window resizing triggering LiveKernelEvent 141 in Optimus mode definitely sounds like an Intel iGPU + NVIDIA display pipeline issue. Since the problem only happens with GPU-accelerated apps and disappears in dGPU-only mode, your testing already narrowed it down really well. Hopefully Intel or ASUS can reproduce and patch it soon.
