Hi, I have an Atom-powered ASUS T100 tablet, all drivers and BIOS up to date. My problem is that every now and then when I'm browsing the Internet using IE I am suddenly logged off! I can see an entry in System Events that says "The Desktop Window Manager has encountered a fatal error (0x8898008d)". My best guess is that graphics driver is not 100% compatible with Windows 8.1, or maybe is somewhat buggy. What can we do about it?
I can post the dxdiag log if necessary. Here's the event info:

Does this happen when using a different browser or graphics driver version?
This is the previous driver: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=24328 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=24328
A similar discussion may provide some hints about the cause of the issue: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/the-desktop-window-manager-has-encountered-a-fatal/ae44c9ea-3b52-451d-a371-91ae375ce353 http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/the-desktop-window-manager-has-encountered-a-fatal/ae44c9ea-3b52-451d-a371-91ae375ce353

That other discussion deals with the sleep mode and is most likely irrelevant for my case. Any way I tried their fix and it did not help me.
The driver packages from Intel's site refuse to install on my tablet. The error is "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer's manufacturer. Setup will exit."
I tried two latest SOC driver packages from ASUS's site. One causes forced logoff. Another just stops rendering windows, and bottom half of the start screen goes black. At least that's what happened today. The system event looks different now:
The Desktop Window Manager has exited with code (0xd00002fe)

You may try the zip file installation method. However, you should consider communicating the issue to the http://support.asus.com/ServiceHome.aspx?SLanguage=en ASUS* if it persists.

When I try the zip file installation method, I get the box which says "the best driver software already installed"
What if I go to the ASUS site and they reply with an offer to communicate to Intel??

I understand your concern but it is also worth trying.
Does the issue still happen even if the driver is uninstalled? You can get the Microsoft's inbox driver via Windows* Update.
You may also consider restoring to a previous restore point when the issue was not present or refreshing your operating system.

I managed to install the new driver by forcing Windows to use the driver from zip.
I think IE crashed once, but without an event in system logs.
We'll see how it goes from here

Did any of the suggestions above help?
You can also try running sfc /scannow in CMD.

No, they did not
I suggest at this point you pass this information to the driver programming team
