ThinkPad E480 Getting Hot when connecting Monitor via HDMI

Hello

I have a Thinkpad E480 with Intel Core i5 8th Gen, 16GB of RAM, 1TB SSD with a factory UHD 620 graphics card.

I only use this laptop for work and don't play any games on it.

The laptop gets very hot when I connect a monitor via HDMI.

When it gets hot, the computer slows down.

On Lenovo's website, they scanned my laptop and found that all my drivers are up to date.

I would appreciate it if you could help me solve my problem.

Thx & Rgds

Isaac

Hello Isaac_Thinkpad,

Thank you for posting on Intel Community Forum.

To address your concern properly, it would be helpful if you can share the information below.

1. Is the system operating stably when an external monitor is not connected?

2. Could you please provide the make and model of the external monitor in use?

3. Have you inspected the cooling system to ensure it is functioning properly?

4. Which applications are typically running when elevated temperatures are observed?

5. Have you attempted to use a different monitor or HDMI cable to eliminate potential hardware-related causes?

6. Does the laptop exhibit elevated temperatures even while idle with the external monitor connected?

Additionally, to have a better understanding of your system configuration and components please generate System Support Utility (SSU) report. Please follow instructions here and send the report - How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows*

I look forward to your response.

Hey JedG

Thx for your reply

I was checking this last saturday on the Intel Website and downloaded a Driver Update for the graphics card and it look like this solve the problem....

Don't understand why when Window is checking for update does not updated this graphics card driver. 🤔

What I notice now is that on the Energy Setup when the laptop is connected to the AC power supply, if I have the Energy in Maximum Performance is getting HOT but in Better Performance is not getting hot.

When is working with the battery and Energy is Maximum Performance is not getting Hot. So I think this driver upgrade solve my issue.

I try it yesterday using only the battery with a external monitor at full battery performance and it works OK

I have tested with 3 external Monitors and different HDMI cables and its working OK

I will keep monitoring the temperature and hope is working ok, if not I will be back.

Thx for your time and help

Isaac
