Washed out or faded Colours Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics

Recently, which seemed to be after a driver update but cat be sure, after reboot, the colours on my GE66 laptop screen appear faded and washed out.

If I disable the intel display adapter in device manager the original vibrant colours return but obviously that comes with different issues in quality, screen res etc.

Have tried to take a screen shot of this but doesn't seem to show the different when saving as a jpg and enabling or disabling the display adapter.  Phone photos kind of shows what I mean...

Seems very similar to this https://superuser.com/questions/1164766/external-monitor-is-washed-out-with-intel-hd-graphics but cant fix it like suggested in the article.  maybe something to do with RGB setting?

Any help appreciated.

Thank you for posting on the Intel️® communities. I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues with your Intel Iris Xe Graphics.


In order to have a better understanding of your issue, please provide me with the following:

  • Try using another Monitor.
  • Uninstall the MSI True Color application, in case you have it installed.
  • Perform a clean installation of our latest graphics driver. It is important to mention that sometimes corrupted files from previous installations of drivers can linger on a system which can cause driver updates to not work as expected.

Thanks for the help!

 

- Have uninstalled MSI true color

- Have followed guidance on doing a fresh clean install of the latest driver

and rebooted.

 

This so far has not made a difference to the washed out colours on the laptop monitor.  Going to try an external monitor now.

Also connected to external monitor via HDMI and colours still seem faded and washed out there.  If i disable the display adapter again it looks a lot better.

Although actually after further testing the external HDMI connected monitor does seem a little better than the laptop screen itself.   so I think better over HDMI.

 

But laptop improves considerably when the intel display adapter is disabled still, external monitor colours improve but only a little.

This was working fine up until a month or so ago.

 

The black just seem so much blacker and colour more vivid when it's disabled. And now seem grey and washed out again on the laptop monitor.

Thanks for your response.


As the issue still persists uninstall perform a clean installation one more time and instead of installing the latest Intel graphics driver, install the recommended drivers from MSI (both Intel Graphics driver 30.0.101.1029 and NVidia driver 511.65). There are two different types of drivers, generics provided by Intel and Equipment Manufacturer drivers, that are customized to work with each specific system. The best thing to do is to use the drivers provided by the system manufacturer (OEM).

I will try it but have used Nvidia GForce Experience App to keep the RTX3070ti drivers up to date since the start with now issues there.

Updated to the older Nvidia drivers as suggested and colours on laptop monitor still washed out.  Unless I disable the Intel Iris XE display driver.  Then colours are great, but this is using the basic MS built in display driver.

After reviewing this matter, I would like to confirm some information:


  • Did the customer complete all Windows updates?
  • When you mentioned the color being "washed out" is it on all apps or just the desktop?
  • Is HDR enabled?
  • Did you test different drivers from Intel? If this is the case, what drivers work and what drivers give them this problem?


Based on the information gathered by the SSU report, the current BIOS seems to be from 01/04/2022, and the latest from the OEM website is 17/11/2022 You should MSI Support directly to confirm if the latest BIOS version is installed on your machine or, if necessary, to gather the instructions on how to update it.

    • Yes all Windows update are complete.

    • All Apps, even when gaming and using the other graphics card.
  • Is HDR enabled?
    • HDR settings say not supported.
  • Did you test different drivers from Intel? If this is the case, what drivers work and what drivers give them this problem?
    • Ive tried 4 or 5 different drivers with no difference.

 

I will flash the bios but I suspect this this not the cause as this was working find previously with the same bios.

The only fix, which appears to be temporary anyway as it comes back after a reboot, is to uninstall device Iris(R) Xe Graphics and then rescan for new hardware.

 

Any ideas why?  What might the root cause be here?

This doesn't seem to be a driver issue as it happens with different versions, HDR is not enabled which doesn't seem to be the cause, we recommend checking with the laptop Manufacturer (OEM) for additional recommendations.

I'm also facing this issue for a few months now, I already know the reason for it but thought it would get solved in the next release. 

 

So the issue is my laptop screen begins to show washed-out colours as soon as it's unplugged, and the reason is the 'Display Power Saving' feature. @Clayts you might have this turned on.

When it's turned on, it makes the display show washed-out colours to save battery, which could be useful for many.

But the issue is that even if it's turned off, it still gets enabled automatically after every Window update. And when that happens, I have to open the command center, go to the 'system' (in the sidebar), then toggle 'Display Power Savings' on and then back to off to get back all the colours.

 

Please fix the issue,  since I had to do this every time I do a Windows update. I have enrolled on Windows Insider builds, So I get more updates than normal, and this problem is very annoying.
