Which Intel chip do I have?

I upgraded (aactually clean install) of Vista 64 to Win 7 64 bit.

I was on the ASUS (Mobo) site for updated drivers.

I found one - Intel Chipset Inf Update Program V9.1.1.1014 for Win7 32bit/64bit- but not sure what Intel chip I have.

If you want to know whether you have an intel desktop board or not:

Use this tool:

You can check from the AA number which you can get from the board sticker or in the bios.

If you want to identify your processor, then

Or get the sl number of the CPU from the processor silver metal.

Well the Board ID utility returned a " No Intel Desktop Board Detected" - which seems odd.

the Intel Processpr ID Utility returned with info that did not seem to help.

Given the above web site (http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-009270.htm) from that list - to me, my board is not listed. So it seems contracdictory to the ASUS driver update page.

If you just want to identify your chipset, see http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-009266.htm. If you're looking for a chipset driver, download and install the http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=816 Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility - it's good for all Intel chipsets.

Since you're using a Core i7 940, most likely you have a X58 chipset

I went to the http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-009266.htm http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-009266.htm website, but Win 7 64 bit (in fact Vista 64) not listed under the operating system section.

I think your right about the X58- that sounds familiar. Per a Intel website I went to, thats part of the 5 family. With a little more research and per my Device Manager, I have a Intel (R) 5520/5500/X58 chip set.

My question now is, do I need to install the Intel chipset Software Install utility.

Intel says -

The best rule of thumb is that, unless you are installing an operating system, you don't need to install the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility. If you do install the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility after installing the operating system, and the installation program recognizes that some or all of the product names in Device Manager match the product names in the included INF files, it just won't install those INF files.

Since I used the Win 7 "Upgrade" DVD - though I did the "Custom"/ clean install - does that qualify as a installing a an operating system ?

I would think that the appropriate Intel driver was installed when I installed Win 7.

Yes that's an OS installation. I'd recommand you install the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility.

Will try this over the week end when I have more time.

My issue was when on the ASUS web site (thats my mobo) there was a similar Chipset install- but it disconnected the sound from the front head phone port of my tower ! An Ikonik Zaria A10. A System Restore to a time prior to that install did not restore the sound.

I ended up using an Image restore - love that Win & feature - as luck would have it, I did an Image Back Up the day before.
