Windows Photo Viewer error msg COM Surrogate not responding (new Dell desktop Win7 64 bit)

Semi-common problem on Google search some machines bomb out on Windows Photo Viewer due to COM Surrogate error.

Typically you can view a couple photos and then it hangs up. I updated INTEL Graphics HD4600 drivers to May_2015 did not seem to help.

Some observers suggested the error debug pointed to the 4600 drivers. 64-Bit systems have less work-around options to solve the problem.

Right now I am going to Photo Gallery instead of Photo Viewer but it's still not rock solid.

Hello TBill,

There is a newer driver that you can try, you can download it and try to manually install it let me know how it works.

Just note that these software drivers are generic versions and can be used for general purposes. However, computer original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) may have altered the features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to the software or software packaging they provide. To avoid any potential installation incompatibilities on your OEM system, Intel recommends that you check with your OEM and use the software provided by your system manufacturer. Intel and the computer original equipment manufacturer (OEM) may not provide technical support for some or all issues that could arise from the usage of this generic version of software drivers.

Ok thank you I'll give that new driver a try, guess I already strayed from OEM drivers so nothing to lose.

I did a few things like SFC /SCANNOW.

Then I tried clean boot process and still had the issues, but the antivirus software was still active.

So I uninstalled several McAfee pre-loaded trial products and that seemed to help a lot.

Getting there now but Photo Viewer still a little buggy.

Hans- By the way, I had already installed that new driver version you suggested (from the Intel site) before I posted.

I may try to go back to OEM version to see if that works. As I say above, I seem to be semi-OK now with the new Intel driver and uninstall of some apps.
