capture card signal status receives 1080p instead of 720p

Description

Provide a detailed description of the issue

I would like to record 720p footage from my Skylake computer. I am using a separate computer for recording with a capture card. In VirtualDub, looking at the custom properties the SIGNAL STATUS does not reflect the resolution on the Skylake system. It always shows 1920x1080P. I have tested the issue on non-Intel system and the SIGNAL STATUS was correct (1280x720P). So I assume some kind of signal protocol is missing from the Skylake driver.

Does it fail every single time, or only sometimes?

If you can offer a % rate please do.

Thank you for your patience.

@@What are the settings you set in VirtualDub to get 720p in the NUC6i7KYK?

If followed these steps, using my capture card;

  1. plug HDMI to DVI cable - HDMI out Skylake, DVI in other config with capture card
  2. start VirtualDub on other config
  3. select File / Capture AVI ...
  4. under the Device menu select the capture card SA7160 PCI, Capture 01 (DirectShow)
  5. check signal status under Device / Capture filter ...
  6. SIGNAL STATUS is 1920x1080P @ 60.00 FPS, should be 1280x720P @ 60.00 FPS

The signal status always shows; 1920x1080P @ 60.00 FPS. If I go to "Capture pin" in Video, I can select the output size I want, signal status does not change; however, the video will be recorded in the resolution you select for the output size. I tested this several times and it worked fine for my and the capture card. See my screenshots, I added some comments in each one of them.

I have also tested this on the NUC6i7KYK, and it worked fine.

This is the configuration I used;

  • ASUS Z170-A
  • Windows 7
  • Intel® HD Graphics driver .4542
  • Halo 2
  • Intel® Core™ i7-6700K Processor
  • Intel® HD Graphics 530
  • USB 3.0 Video Capture Device - HDMI / DVI / VGA / Component HD Video Recorder - 1080p 60fps
  • TV LG Super UHD 4K HDR 55UH8500
  • HDMI connection

Then using the Intel® NUC Kit;

  • Intel® NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK
  • Windows® 10
  • Intel® HD Graphics driver .4542
  • Halo 2
  • Intel® Core™ i7-6770HQ Processor
  • Intel® Iris™ Pro Graphics 580
  • USB 3.0 Video Capture Device - HDMI / DVI / VGA / Component HD Video Recorder - 1080p 60fps
  • TV LG Super UHD 4K HDR 55UH8500
  • HDMI connection

Sorry Amy for the late reply.

Thanks for your feedback.

As I record game footage for benchmark purposes with http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/fcat FCAT overlay, I need the footage to be lossless - otherwise I cannot process the color-coded bars.

In the Capture pin dialog box you can set 720p resolution, but if your signal is 1080p, it downscales the video on the fly and I cannot process the colored bars properly - downscaling introduces blurring at the borders. On the "Video" menu, Set Custom format... you can set custom size as well. I think it is the same as in the Capture pin dialog box.

As the interlacing issue was only a fix in an older driver and I have to use up-to-date drivers for games with optimizations for every title, I tried to create custom resolutions in the hope of solving the interlacing bug.

Much to my surprise, if a set 1080p 60Hz and 1080p 59Hz custom resolutions I am able to record lossless 720p - signal status is 1280x720p 59.94Hz. And both Skylake systems work, with splitter!!! Big thank you for staying committed to this problem.

Unfortunately, now 1080p recording is not flawless, I got inserted frames with the above mentioned custom resolutions or got interlaced signal. Strange. Have to test things further!

Thanks, I think it's time to close this issue!

Hi Amy,

I'm back!

I tried to benchmark Unigine's new benchmark application, https://unigine.com/en/products/benchmarks/superposition Superposition on my http://boostclock.com/builds/slim-sff-i3-6100.html i3-6100 system. And guess what, the signal that I receive is bad.

I replicated my issue on a Sony Bravia TV, so you cannot blame the error on my capture solution / setup - a provide a https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwJS2fmb5jMfNTdLWFk5TGpTVUU video as a proof of my problem.

Notice the resolution change pop-up message on the top left corner of the TV. I'm on 720p on the desktop, it changes to 1080p as I start the benchmark, and goes back to 720p as I cancel the benchmark run. This is the very same thing I get on my capture card.

To repeat my problem:

- cannot receive proper 1280x720p @ 59.95 FPS signal from many gaming applications.

- setting custom resolution 1920x1080p @ 59 FPS and 1920x1080p @ 60 FPS sometimes remedies the situation, don't know why, very strange. DeusEx, Far Cry Primal send bad FullHD @ 50 FPS signal without these custom resolutions, for example.

- no problem with NVIDIA gpus, AMD gpus and apus.

I deploy frame time analysis for benchmarking purposes on http://boostclock.com/ BoostClock, and I need correct resolution for the analysis.

Is there any chance to get proper (engineer) support for my issue, I want to test Kaby Lake processors and I think the very same thing will pop-up with those CPUs as well.

Hi Amy!

I can capture correct 720p footage from both the i3-6100 and the i3-7100 - still have to apply 1080p 59Hz and 1080p 60Hz custom resolutions.

In some games I have to set the refresh rate from Auto to 59Hz.

After a Windows update I got bad signal again, but completely removing the Intel driver with http://www.wagnardsoft.com/ DDU and reinstalling it solved the problem. So this can be a Windows issue in some way.

Haven't experimented with 1080p. I will report back if anything goes wrong again!

Thanks for your support!

Just to recap what I do and what is the issue.

I would like to reintroduce Intel IGP gaming tests to BoostClock. Gen11 looks promising and much of our subscribers love low-end gaming systems.

My framework relies on gathering frame time data at the display level. FCAT (Frame Capture Analysis Tool) hooks to the application and colors every frame with a different color.

We record the game footage on a separate PC with a capture card in it and analyze the colored sequence to calculate frame times.

The issue with Intel IGPs that the signal may not adhere to the resolution that is set in the application / game and this introduces minimal blurring in the recorded video. But this is more than enough to corrupt the colored frame time borders.

I reported about this issue nearly 3 years ago, and unfortunately, IGPs still produce it.

I have to apply 1080p 59Hz and 1080p 60Hz custom resolutions in the Control Panel to get proper 720p signal. This works most of the time.

Just ran through some games from my Steam Library - F1 2018, Deus Ex, Shadow of the Tomb Raider works fine.

The 2 apps that have issues are World of Tank enCore benchmark and Unigine Superposition.

The problem is not with my recording setup, as a Sony Bravia TV also produces the issue. You can see how the resolution change notification appears in the top left corner. Desktop 720p, I set 720p resolution in the benchmark, but as it starts the resolution notification appears and says it's on 1080p.

This was recorded 2 years ago, but the same thing is still here with latest driver (25.20.100.6577) and Win10 (very fresh clean install with every update applied).

Let's get to the bottom of this! 😉
