I have a Intel graphics card with a ViewSonic vsd220 monitor attached. I can only at random get it to work because the display drivers will not enable the device without first detecting a monitor, and the display reverts to a different source if no signal is detected.
On my ati desktop I can simply force the display and/pair force detection, but I can find no such thing in the Intel advanced settings. How do I force detection or better yet, just force the display on since I know it is there? I am running windows 2008 r2, but I get this same behavior in 32bit/64bit windows 7 and windows 8. This happens primarily to secondary monitor, as the first one is forced on during boot.
Any help would be appreciated.

Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
It is the one inside the dell e6500.
Is there not a standardize method to force a monitor on? I am fully capable of dealing with either ensuring a monitor is connected or reverting to a single monitor configuration if the monitor is not going to be available.
