igfxtray.exe fault 0xc0000005 hangs Windows 8 logon

When starting up Windows 8.1 on a Dell XPS 15 laptop, I booted the system and then walked away for a few minutes without logging in. When I returned and entered my password, the login screen hung with "Welcome" displayed and the spinner of death doing its circle dance. I checked the Event Viewer and found this event shortly after the time of powering on but before I logged in:

It looks like this fault caused the hang. I haven't found a fix for it. Are there any Intel developers out there who care enough to fix buggy software?

I would need more information in regards to your system configuration:

Which version of Windows do you have?

Also, the exact processor model and the graphics controller:

http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-009482.htm Graphics Drivers — How to Identify Your Intel® Graphics Controller

Click the Windows icon, and then right-click Computer .

Select Properties .

Find System Type on the Properties window, and then note the processor model.

Allan.

Hello n8turepix.

Thanks for the information.

In this particular situation and since the igfxtray.exe fault 0xc0000005 is showing up, I suggest uninstalling the current graphics driver, testing the system with windows* graphics driver and then proceed to download and reinstall the latest driver from here https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25425/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-15-36- Download Intel® Graphics Driver for Windows 7/8.1* [15.36] ,

Please provide you graphics report http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-009476.htm Graphics Drivers — Intel® Graphics Driver Report

Regards,

Caesar B.
