multiple display priority favors HDMI over DVI and can't switch back from HDMI to DVI

Xeon® Processor E3-1245 v5 w/P530 graphics,, Win 7 pro/x64, driver win64_154022.4424

Usually I run a DVI output to a monitor that has no HDMI capability. I tried to do HDMI/audio out to a stereo unit while continuing to run the DVI monitor connection. The DVI monitor goes blank until I unplug the HDMI connector. I've dragged the mouse from one end to the other and can't get the DVI display to appear. Of course, when the HDMI connector is unplugged, all the graphics interfaces (Intel and Windows 7) tell me there's only one display and there's no apparent way to configure the HDMI as the second monitor.

On another system also win 7/pro x64 that has a E3-1246 v3, the data port connection also takes priority over DVI but it doesn't interfere with HDMI and/or audio out on other devices.

Hello, All:

Thank you Ronin for the recommendation, Art Lazanoff you can test it but before, please follow the steps below.

-Access the device manager (you can use windows start search to find it).

-Look for Display adapters double click on it.

-Right click on your Intel® HD Graphics and hit properties.

-Go to driver tab and hit uninstall.

-Select "Delete the driver software for this device"

Then install the driver and let us know how it goes.

My original note didn't report that the HDMI/display port problem appears at boot time, too, well before any software drivers are in use. I looked into possible BIOS options that might govern this behavior but haven't found anything. I've also been in contact with Supermicro tech support. I think I should be able to set a priority to favor a specific graphics output device.

This problem interferes with my ability to interface to the boot time Intel RAID BIOS options and other boot time add-in cards.

Details:

CPU: Xeon® Processor E3-1245 v5 w/P530 graphics

M/B: Supermicro X11SAE-F C600/C220+

RAM: 64GB DDR4-2133 ECC

Monitor: Dell P2715Q using mini dataport connection

HDMI: output to stereo receiver for audio output only, no

video/graphics output

System drives: Dell SSD 850

RAID-6: 3ware 9750 controller with 8 WD40EFRX drives

LAN: besides onboard Intel I210, Intel X520-T2.

Windows 7 on one system drive. CentOS 7 on the other system drive.

When the HDMI device is not powered up or connected to the M/B's HDMI socket, video/graphics get correctly delivered to the dataport monitor. When I plug in/power up the stereo receiver, the dataport connection blanks out. Pulling the HDMI plug restores the dataport display.

I'll be happy to test the drivers you refer to above but I don't think they have any relevance to this issue. I resolved my problem by swapping the HDMI connection for an optical fiber in the M/B's s/pdif

audio output. S/pdif though doesn't support audio sample rates > 96 KHz. The Dell monitor's audio output is also very limited.

Thanks for your attention to this.

Hi, art_l :

I am truly sorry for the delayed answer!!

Were you able to get this issue resolved? Maybe with Supermicro's recommendations or something else?

There aren't any Supermicro/AMI BIOS options that govern the CPU's action of switching video from the DisplayPort to HDMI.

Is the Intel processor at fault or is the AMI BIOS? Is there supposed to be a user option to prioritize/select the graphics output connection?

My "fix" is to avoid using HDMI. I unplugged the HDMI cable that I was using for audio output and changed to using s/pdif output.

I would add that my HDMI experience on other platforms with more conventional HDMI purposes is very disappointing. HDMI might only "synchronize" both the source and the output device when I disconnect power on both devices. Also powering up a HDMI connection that might already be "synchronized" produces a noticeable interruption in viewing.

Thanks,

Art

Thank you for the answer, art_l, I've seen that option of selecting the desired output port on Intel motherboards, not sure about third party boards.

About the behavior of HDMI/DP and the signal, let me further investigate that matter, I will keep you posted.

Here's a link to the M/B I'm using. There is a Motherboard Manual available from this reference (see Links and Resources).

https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C236_C232/X11SAE-F.cfm X11SAE-F | Motherboards | Products - Super Micro Computer, Inc.

I disabled the onboard VGA using jumpers (p2-32) JPG1.

BIOS Graphics configuration on p4-16 -- I selected the Primary Display option IGFX.

There aren't any add-in graphics cards installed.

I use the PCI-e 8x and 16 x slots for a LSI/3Ware RAID 9750-8i (8 lanes) and for a Intel 10gig-e x520-t2 (8 lanes). These consume the 16 lanes that the E3-1245 v5 supplies. This is also why I chose a Xeon with an onboard graphics processor... didn't need any more PCI-e lanes!

I tried to order an Intel Extreme board for this application but Intel stopped manufacturing consumer boards.

Thanks again,

Art

Hello, art_l:

I got some additional information about this matter.

The problem seems to be that the driver is activating only 1 graphics pipeline, and when the receiver is turned on, the HDMI auto-detect feature kicks in.

Please press the Windows key + P and cycle through the modes (single, clone, extended) to check if you can enable DP (for video) + HDMI (with audio only).

Additionally, I have seen some receivers that have the option to disable its video output, would you please double check if this is available in your product?

This is to handle the issue within the OS, during boot the behavior can be different, in order to treat this during boot, the best option for you is to contact the manufacturer of the motherboard.

I hope this can assist you with the issue, and please let me know how it goes 🙂

Hi Esteban,

Thanks for your help. Tweaking the stereo receiver works for my configuration. I switched the HDMI input to AUX instead of using one of TV, Blu-ray, DVD inputs. These last 3 choices expect video out but apparently AUX doesn't. I also disabled the receiver's HDMI control option that attempts to control power for attached HDMI devices. This latter option uses some power and isn't necessary for my configuration.

It took a bit of time to test the configuration. The PC's boot BIOS displays are now visible. When I power up the receiver after the system is running the display blanks momentarily and then resumes its display without intervention.

We can close this ticket.
