Destiny 2 driver issues

Hi,

Just to begin with, I'm not looking for troubleshooting advice or working on work arounds. I have access to GPUs from other vendors which aren't giving the same problems so I'm personally fine to skip this.

I am employed by one of the main system integrators within the UK and I am fortunate enough to have the ability to play with lots of different components so I have tried this in several different setups, using Alchemist and Battlemage GPUs and also using CPUs from both Vendors ranging from 9th gen intel, up to 200s (including everything in between) and also several generations using both the AM4 and AM5 sockets. This is also across both Windows 10 and 11 with fresh installs and up to date drivers for their corresponding chipsets.

I've noticed issues since the latest Destiny 2 expansion in which the driver is freezing the game, specifically when going into a menu of sorts. I've not seen this happen during gameplay and doesn't seem related to a specific 'activity' in the game. An educated guess would be that going from gameplay fps to menu fps is quite a leap and sometimes trips the driver up. The only way to resolve the issue is to task manager up and end the task.

Based on all the testing I've done on this, the only thing this could logically be in the Intel driver for the discreet GPUs.

I hope this is enough information, feel free to ask any questions. Is it possible to send this across to the driver development team?

Hi NemolitioN,

Thank you for posting in our Community, and thank you for sharing such a detailed overview of your testing and observations regarding Destiny 2. From what you’ve described, the issue does appear linked to Intel® discrete GPU drivers, particularly during transitions between gameplay and in-game menus. To help us document this thoroughly for our driver development team, may I kindly ask for the following additional information:

  1. Exact GPU models tested (for both Intel® Alchemist and Battlemage).
  2. Driver versions where you observed the freezing issue. Did this occur across multiple releases, or only with the latest drivers?
  3. Game build/expansion version you are currently running (to align with the point where you began noticing the problem).
  4. Reproduction steps, could you confirm if this happens consistently when opening menus (e.g., inventory, settings, character screen), or only intermittently?
  5. Logs or crash dumps (if available) – such as Intel® SSU report, graphics event logs, or any Windows reliability monitor entries when the freeze occurs.

Once we have this information, we can formally further investigate the issue.

Have a nice day!

Best regards,

Hi Von M,

Thanks for your response.

Had to take some time to go over the answers to your questions.

The discrete GPUs in question I've tested personally have been:

B580
B570
A770 16gb
A770 8gb
A750
A580

Drivers that I have tested:

32.0.101.6972
32.0.101.6989
32.0.101.7028

I've noticed the issues since the Edge of Fate expansion consistently across each update.

For reproduction, it could be done simply by playing the game from an in activity setting and opening the inventory screen at random intervals. I have successfully managed to replicate this in a short time frame in which I have landed in a zone called EDZ. An area accessible to any new starter, and repeatedly come in and out of the inventory and gameplay screen.

In regards to dumps or reports, I'm rather limited, though I've made a fresh SSU report. I've forced the crash to do this again and nothing shows in reliability history as it doesn't generate a typical game crash. The game freezes and you're forced to end task in the task manager. For this reason, it shows as if the game was just manually stopped via end task. The description for this event states "The program destiny2.exe version 39755.0.0.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.", of which nothing is highlighted in the prompted area. Within the Event Viewer, this is repeated but seemingly only gives details of the game failing due to ending task rather than a reported driver failure.

I believe that's all the information I'm able to provide from my end in this format. I am more than happy to demonstrate this or walk someone through this should any clarification be required. Assuming my email address is displayed for certain roles such as yourself or a developer, I'm happy to be contacted directly.

Hello NemolitioN,

Thank you for the detailed update and for sharing the SSU report along with your reproduction steps. I’ll need to conduct additional research on this issue and will post an update in this thread once I have more information about this matter.
