Fortnite Crashing if DirectX 12 is the API and the Ratio settings doesn't work

There's an issue where you get a crash for DirectX 12 on Fortnite. This happens if you alt+tab or if you put your app on the background. Now it's annoying the Fortnite has multiple problems such as Fps Drops for me but this is the most annoying so far. There's no problem in DirectX 11. And somehow not only in the Fortnite but the Ratio thing in the Drivers aren't working properly. There's literally no difference between 720p centered or preserve aspect ratio it's always the same and this is not only a special thing for some games but for a lot of games. So far i have experienced this in Fortnite,DayZ,Pubg and Minecraft. I Don't even know if there's a difference between a Gpu upscaling and Display upscaling now. I'm using the latest driver 8247.

so if Fortnite keeps crashing on DX12 and your ratio/scaling settings ain’t working, here’s what you can try to chill that out:

1.) Switch to DX11 for now,

Open Fortnite → Settings → Graphics → set DirectX 11 instead of 12. This is the simplest fix until Epic/Intel patches DX12 crashes.

2.) Check your alt+tab/game background stuff,

DX12 seems super sensitive to switching out of the game. Try not to alt+tab while playing. If you need to multitask, DX11 handles it better

3.) Reset Driver Scaling

Open Intel Graphics Command Center → Display → Scaling. Set to “Maintain Display Scaling” or “Maintain Aspect Ratio”, then restart the game.

4.) Update or Roll Back Drivers

Latest driver 8247 might be buggy for DX12 + scaling. Check if there’s a newer one, or roll back one version and see if it fixes Fortnite and other games like PUBG/DayZ.

5.) Game-Specific Settings

Lowering Fortnite resolution or turning off features like Ray Tracing / DLSS / FidelityFX sometimes helps with DX12 stability

the TL;DR: here is

  • DX12 crashes = temporary switch to DX11.

  • Ratio/scaling mess = reset driver settings and pick one method (GPU vs display scaling).

  • Keep drivers stable, avoid alt+tab, and tweak in-game settings.

Once Epic/Intel patch the DX12 crash, you can go back and enjoy it fully. Until then, DX11 is your safe zone....

...hope it helps

Thank you for your advise but i'm more likely looking for a radical solution from Intel itself. DirectX 11 is a safe solution for now but still Intel has to polish it's drivers and i'm really not seeing much progress so far on some games. So i came here to make a ticket about the latest issues. Ratio can be fixed by trying to change it multiple times but it's not how it should work. And it did worked perfectly before. Still Thanks for you act of kidness tho.

Hi CrilAR,

Thank you for posting in our Community. It seems that the crash in Fortnite when using DirectX 12 and the inconsistent behavior of the scaling ratio settings may be related to recent driver-level changes. I’d like to gather a few additional details so I can analyze this further:

  • When Fortnite crashes under DirectX 12, do you see any specific error message or fault module name?
  • Could you confirm if you’re using Intel Arc Control or the Intel Graphics Command Center to manage display scaling?
  • Have you noticed any difference in behavior when setting GPU scaling vs. Display scaling in the driver settings?

I'd like to delve deeper and verify specifics like the graphics models, precise driver versions, and any system errors. Utilizing the Intel SSU tool will enable me to collect detailed information about your system setup, which could aid in identifying the underlying cause of this issue. Additionally, to help me analyze the crashing issues more thoroughly and pinpoint the root cause, may I kindly request that you provide the Event Logs for this game? Additionally, if available, please include the dump file, as this will greatly assist in identifying the underlying issue

Have a nice day!
