Installing Arc Control changes the same three taskbar icons to their generic versions on reboot

The last several driver updates have resulted in some taskbar icons changing from their dedicated icon images to a generic icon image. This occurs when I reboot my PC at the completion of the driver update.

I have noticed several things regarding this issue:

  • It always just affects the same three icons. Google Chrome, HWiNFO64 and Intel PresentMon - refer attached file which shows an image of my taskbar before and after installing an Arc driver and rebooting. The other taskbar icons are unaffected.
  • It only occurs following the reboot and not at the completion of the driver installation before rebooting.
  • It does not occur if I choose to only update the driver, but not install Arc Control via unchecking the 'install Arc Control' checkbox via the Customize option.
  • The icons all return to normal if I uninstall the driver/Arc Control via DDU.
  • I get the same change to the icon's if I install a BETA or WHQL driver.
  • It does not mater if I remove the old driver/Arc Control first via DDU or install an updated over the top of an existing driver - on reboot the same three icons change to their generic versions on the taskbar.

As per my third dot point, it seems that the issue is triggered by installing Arc Control and not the driver.

It's not a major issue, but it ideally should not be happening and I am keen to assist in any way I can to find what the issue is and to find a solution.

Hello BigNish7,

Since we have not been able to experience the same behavior you reported, this doesn't seem to be a problem with the graphics driver. Finally, after looking into this internally, we will recommend you to contact Microsoft support as the issue might related to your Operating System and environment.

Hello BigNish7,

Thank you for reporting your issue in the Intel Communities. We are here to help you solve the icon problems when installing the Intel Arc software.

We see that you have already tried multiple troubleshooting steps, however, we would like to ask you for more details about your system. Please provide us with a system report using the Intel System Support Utility (Intel SSU):

  • Open the application and click "Scan" to see the system and device information. By default, Intel SSU will take you to the "Summary View."
  • Click on the menu where it says: "Summary" to change it to "Detailed View."
  • To save your scan: click "Next"; then "Save."

Hello BigNish7,

We have been able to test the issue you described; unfortunately, we have not been able to replicate the issue. We made sure to uninstall Arc Control before updating the driver so it was installed along the driver when updating; however, the taskbar icons for PresentMon, HWinfo, and Chrome were always their corresponding icons after Reboot. This time, we would recommend you test again with our newest driver

Hi Jean O.

Thank you very much for your reply. Hmm, that makes it a bit tricky.  I did indeed try with the latest WHQL driver (v. 5081), but had the same issue I am afraid to say.

I also noticed another icon related issue. If I look using file explorer at where I have the older Intel drivers stored, they use generic icons for the driver files. However, if I go to the intel driver page and select he .PDF Release Notes and want to download them to the same folder, the driver icons are no longer generic, but show the specific intel icon. I have attached a video capture of what I mean.

Could this be a related issue?

Kindest regards,

BigNish7

Hello BigNish7,

We understand that the issue remains after you installed the latest driver. Thank you for sharing the video where we see that the driver installation files use the generic icons, but the driver icons show the specific Intel icon when you go to the Intel driver page and select the PDF Release Notes to download the PDF file into the same folder. We will resume our research on this matter, and we will be posting back as soon as we have more details.

Hi Jean O.

I think I have found the solution to my issue!

Before contacting Microsoft Support, I took the plunge and did a complete fresh reinstall of Windows 11 on my PC. As I have been building PCs for many years, it was not a difficult issue for me - just a bit of a pain as I have to reinstall everything again.

Anyway, everything seemed to be going OK, and then after one generic reboot, those pesky icons reverted to their generic versions again on the taskbar! Errr.

Then I thought of something out of left field to try. I opened Control Panel -> System & Security -> Power Options -> Choose what the power buttons do (option on the LHS) . I then clicked the 'Change settings that are currently unavailable' link and un-checked the 'Turn on fast start-up  (recommended)' check box - refer attached image.

I remembered that having Fast start-up enabled was an issue back when I had AMD Radeon graphics cards.

To my genuine surprise the generic taskbar icons immediately returned to their specific icons after un-checking the check box and clicking the 'Save change' button - without having to restart my PC!

I am really hoping that this was the root cause of my issue and will be monitoring it over the coming days.

Kindest regards,

BigNish7

Thank you very much for your reply Jean O.

I sincerely appreciate the effort you and the Intel technicians have gone to to try to replicate my problem and assist me. I had also begun to think it was a Windows issue, but it seemed to be triggered with the Intel driver/Arc Control installation - sorry for thinking it might be the driver. Interestingly the desktop icons were not affected when I only installed the driver and not Arc Control.

Thank you also for the link to Microsoft support. I will follow up with them and see if they can determine the issue and offer a solution (likely to be reinstall Windows - based on previous experience).

Kindest regards,

BigNish7

Hi Jean O.

Unfortunately this proved to be only a temporary solution (sigh). At my next restart, the generic icons in the taskbar returned - refer to the attached image.

I will now contact Microsoft Support and see what further information or assistance they can provide,

If they are able to solve my issue, I will get back in touch with the solution.

Kindest regards,

BigNish7
