The Forever Winter

Hi All,

I am hoping that someone at the Intel Arc team can do some optimization for "The Forever Winter". I have an intel B580 and even when I have all the setting set to Low the game is running at 20ish FPS.

I know that "The Forever Winter" is still in Alpha but it's a great game and I really want to play it at a reasonable frame rate.

Hello Firescout,

Thank you for posting in the communities!

I'm sorry to learn that you are experiencing issues with your system. To better assist you and determine the most appropriate resolution, could you please provide the needed details listed below:

  • May I know if the game is working fine before? if yes, what are the changes on the system before encountering this issue?
  • What Graphics driver version you're using?
  • Have you tried updating your GPU drivers to the latest version?
  • Did you download the game on Steam?

Best regards,

Earl E.

- The game has never worked well. I usually hover around 20 fps on the lowest settings. I should also mention that when I run the game my GPU runs at 100%

- The driver I am using is 32.0.101.6653

- This should be the most updated driver

- Yes, I downloaded the game from Steam

Hello Firescout,

I appreciate your efforts for providing this information. To help us get to the bottom of the performance issues and find ways to improve your gaming experience, could you share a bit more information with me?

  1. What settings are you currently using in the game? This will help us figure out if there are any tweaks that might boost performance.
  2. Are there specific moments in the game where you notice the biggest drops in FPS? Knowing this can help us pinpoint what's going on.
  3. Could you run a System Support Utility (SSU) report? It gives us a snapshot of your system's setup. You can download the tool here and follow the steps to generate a report. Just attach it to your reply.
  4. If you have any screenshots of your game settings or scenes where the FPS drops, those would be super helpful for us to see.

Best regards,

Context, please see attached SSU report on my system.

To answer your questions:

1. Game settings are a little complicated because of the Unreal engine and features like Lumen. AFAIK Lumen is active in TFW, and tanks performance in general. As well as things like Raytracing. There are no option to disable these within the game settings unless you create a custom ini and disable it through that. Doing so completely destroys the visual fidelity though, game looks horrible and doesn't perform much better either.

1.1 I've set overall preset settings on LOW, and then the individual settings to either medium or high, depending on resource intensity. (Or what I think might be resource intensive.)

2. Specific moments would include things like if there's a lot of units on the map, if units rapidly move across the map (there's a physics bug in the game where tanks sometimes literally fly across the map after being attached by a mech or something. It's spectacular to witness.)

2.1. Rapidly doing a 180 in the game will also tank performance.

2.2. Even in quiet moments, sometimes, the performance is bad. Could be some assets that are too large, 8k or something along that line.

3. See attached.

4. No screenshots from me sorry, but using Steam's FPS overlay to check performance.

Hello!

Perhaps I can assist with this. I recently built a PC again after half a decade of being out of the game. I settled on the B580 and it's quite a nice card. I'm very happy with it, most games perform very well on it. However, The Forever Winter is in VERY early access and as such the performance completely tanks. This is partially due to the Unreal engine, the studio having a very specific vision for the visuals of the game and things like optimization not yet being a priority on this game.

That being said, on my machine I'm lucky if I can get 60fps. The range of frames are all over the place with some extreme spikes.

What can I provide you to better help understand if the issue does lie with the game, my system or whether it's just user error?

I appreciate you gathering all this information for us to better understand the root cause of the issue.

But in order for us to focus and look into your inquiry more thoroughly, please create a new post about it so I can concentrate on the issue.

Hi Firescout,

I have not heard back from you, so I will close this inquiry now. If you need further assistance, please submit a new question, as this thread will no longer be monitored.

Hi this issue still exists and needs to be fixed. I am still getting around 20 FPS when I run the game

What is your hardware specs? I'm getting a fairly good 40fps on the low end at the moment. Things have improved drastically. But it's mostly the Unreal engine that the game runs on that's so poorly optimized.
