Arc B580 Thermal Throttling at 70°c

Hello,

recently i've noticed that my Arc B580 (ASRock Steel Legend) starts thermal throttling as soon as the Core VR Temperature (HWInfo reading) hits 70°c. Core Clock then decreases by around 100mhz. (this happens in every game or benchmark i have tested so far)

I can't say when this started but i'm 100% sure this did not happen a few weeks ago, so this is probably not the expected behaviour.

SSU Report, HWinfo Screenshot (5 minutes duration) and Tuning Settings Screenshot are attached.

I did the usual of course. DDU, install 8331 driver. Tried it with and without tuning but no matter what i do, the gpu keeps throttling.

I could tighten the fan curve to keep the temps below 70°c but i specifically got a 3 fan model because i hate fan noise.

I hope you can help me with this.

Hello blagyyy,

Thank you for posting on Intel Community Forum.

To address the issue effectively, please share the information below.

1. How quickly does the Core VR temperature rise to 70°C after starting a game/benchmark?

2. Did you make any recent changes to the system?

3. Are you using any overclocking software?

I look forward to your response.

Best regards

Hello Jed,

thanks for the reply.

1. It takes a couple of minutes for the Core VR Temp to reach 70°C.

It's usually the following scenario:

- Core Temp reaches 62-64°C

- Core VR Temp keeps climbing up to 70°C

- GPU starts throttling and drops Core Clock by around 100mhz.

2. No changes within the last few months.

3. Only the Intel Software.

I did some more Testing after my initial Post.

The GPU seems to behave differently in 3dmark.

I did a few Steel Nomad Runs and noticed the following:

- Core Temp reaches 62°C and the GPU instantly starts throttling. This happens within 5-10 seconds.

- Core VR Temp stays at or below 60°C

So the Core Temp seems to be the limiting factor in this case.

Reducing the Temp Limit to e.g. 80% reduces the maximum Core Temp accordingly. (50°C down from 62°C)

This is the last run from today:

Intel Arc B580 Grafikkarten Benchmark Resultat - AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. B550-A PRO (MS-7C56)

This is an older run i did after buying the B580:

Intel Arc B580 Grafikkarten Benchmark Resultat - AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. B550-A PRO (MS-7C56)

I'll attach another HWInfo Screenshot.

Hello blagyyy,

I am reaching out to provide troubleshooting steps and request additional information to assist in resolving the issue. Please review the details below.

  • Clean the System to ensure proper ventilation and airflow.
  • Ensure that all GPU fans are working.
  • Was the GPU overclocked?
  • Have you tried using a different power supply?
  • Have you made any changes to your system's voltages that may affect the GPU?
  • Have you tried using the GPU on another system to see if the same issue will be observed?
  • Besides the Intel Graphics Software, are using any other tuning software that may be running in the background?
  • Have you tried the Reset Tuning Option for GPU and fans under the Tuning Tab in IGS?

I hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards

- My system is properly cleaned and airflow is not a problem. As i've told you before, the gpu starts throttling at a mere 62°C/70°C.

- GPU fans are working.

- Overclock or no overclock makes no difference.

- I can not try another Power Supply.

- No voltage changes whatsoever.

- I don't have another system to test the GPU in.

- No other Tuning Software besides IGS.

- Yes, i have tried the reset tuning option. I even tried the last 4 Driver Versions. (DDU in between every Driver Install - which takes forever btw as the B580 sometimes refuses to output any signal when entering Safe Mode.)

Small Update:

Just to be sure there is nothing wrong with my Windows, i did a clean Windows 11 Installation.

That has changed nothing of course. Just as expected.

It's still the same behaviour in games and benchmarks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I also did test another GPU (GTX 1070) with max overclock and did not see any problems with it.

This has to be a Driver problem of some sort.

Hello blagyyy,

I’m reaching out to provide you with an update following our investigation. Based on our review, since you have already tried multiple driver versions and performed a clean reinstallation of your operating system, we can reasonably rule out firmware or driver-related issues for this case at this time.

As the next step, we recommend proceeding with BIOS-level adjustments to further address the concern. Please find our detailed recommendations below:

  • Load BIOS defaults - to ensure everything is optimized.
  • Use a non-BETA release of the BIOS, since you are using a BETA version as seen from the support website of B550-A PRO.
  • If above steps are not possible, or the issue still persist, we recommend reaching out to Asrock support for RMA options since this may already be a hardware issue with the GPU.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Hello Jed,

reverting the BIOS did, unfortunately, not help.

It seems i really have to RMA the card.

Thanks for your help in this matter. At least we can rule out any Driver Issues now.

Hello blagyyy,

I’m contacting you on behalf of my colleague Jed. Based on the recent recommendations and the outcome of our analysis, please proceed with the RMA option for the unit in question, as the issue appears to be hardware-related.

I will now close this thread, and please note that it will no longer be monitored. If you encounter any issues in the future, feel free to create a new thread, and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Best regards
