Crash on Vulkan and poor performance on DirectX12 (PoE2 0.4)

Hello,

Since Path of Exile 2 patch 0.4, the game crashes when using the Vulkan renderer on my Intel Arc B580.

  • Vulkan crashes after 1–2 minutes (menu or shortly after entering a zone).
  • The game closes without an error message.
  • Windows reliability monitor points to igc64.dll.
  • Clean driver install was performed.
  • Tested driver: 32.0.101.8331 WHQL.

As a workaround, DirectX 12 does not crash, but performance is very poor
(I can get as low as 10 fps)
This issue did not exist in version 0.3.1: Vulkan was stable with 60+ FPS in endgame.

System:

  • Intel Arc B580

  • i5-14600K

  • 32 GB RAM

    Thanks for looking into this.

Hello Grinou,

Thank you for posting on Intel Community Forum.

To address the issue properly, please share the information below.

1. Are you using any game mods, overlays, or third-party tools?

2. What's the exact crash timing - does it happen at the same point consistently or randomly?

3. Is ReBAR (Resizable BAR) enabled in your BIOS?

4. Did you use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) for the clean driver installation?

5. Are you launching through Steam, Epic, etc.?

6. Is the issue isolated to Path of Exile 2?

7. Are there any error message when the game crashes?

Additionally, to have a better understanding of your system configuration and components please generate a complete copy of the System Support Utility (SSU) report. Please follow instructions here and send the report - How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows*

I look forward to your response.

Best regards

Hi, thanks for your reply. (I created a bug report thread on the PoE2 forum, and all Intel Arc users are experiencing this problem.)

  1.  I don't use an overlay for the game.
  2.  With Vulkan, the game crashes within the first two minutes of launching.
  3.  Yes, ReBAR is enabled in my BIOS.
  4.  Yes, I performed a clean install of DDU with the 32.0.101.8331 WHQL Certified update.
  5.  I launch the game with Steam.
  6.  Yes, it only happens with Path of Exile 2.
  7.  There are no error messages when the game crashes with Vulkan, the game closes instantly.

And I've added the Intel SSU report, thank you for your reply.

B580 user and this happened to me as well when I was playing PoE2's free trial. My performance started tanking when i would aggro huge mobs + AOE's going off. So I saw you can switch to vulkan -> attempted to then the game kept crashing like 3-4 seconds after starting up, one attempt i was quick enough to get into settings and revert to dx12 and game was back stable.

Hello Grinou,

I’m reaching out on behalf of my colleague, Jed. Since this involves a crashing issue, may I kindly request that you generate a kernel or complete crash dump, along with a screenshot of the Event Viewer? This will help me verify whether the problem is related to the driver or the application/game itself. Your input will be greatly appreciated, as it will assist us in further investigation and analysis.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Best regards

Hello,

As requested, I am providing the crash investigation materials for the Vulkan crash occurring in Path of Exile 2.

Attached you will find:

  • A full process crash dump of PathOfExileSteam.exe generated at the time of the crash

  • Event Viewer screenshots (Application log), including the detailed EventData view

This issue occurs as a crash to desktop when using the Vulkan API, without a BSOD, and started after the latest Path of Exile 2 update.

Due to the forum attachment size limit (23 MB), I uploaded the full crash dump to Google Drive.
Download link:

Please let me know if you need additional dumps, logs, or further testing on my side.

Hello, I have the same problem with POE2 version 0.4. The frame rate of DX12 is very unstable. No matter how I adjust the display settings, even at the lowest settings of 1080p, it is still the same. When using character skills to fight monsters, the frame rate drops to single digits. The frame rate looks normal in towns. Moreover, I can't get into the game with Vulkan version 0.4. I'm sorry, I don't know how to provide logs or other attachments. I am basically unable to play the game now.

Hi!

I also have this same issue. Vulkan crashes - no error or anything. The game just closes.

DX12 is also very unplayable. I get like 100+ fps in tame situations but it drops to nearly 20 fps with many enemies and effects.

I hope this issue can be resolved soon

Hello Grinou,

I'm getting back in touch to ask which issue would you like us to focus on, since we can only accommodate 1 issue per thread. Do you prefer us to focus on the crashes on Vulkan or low performance with DX12? This is to ensure that we'll be able to provide you with specific troubleshooting steps to address the issue.

I look forward to your response.

Hi

Like many players, we find Vulkan to be more stable on Path of Exile 2, so it's best to prioritize crashes with Vulkan.

Hi  Grinou,

Thank you for your response and letting us know to focus on the crashing issue. Can you try to perform the following troubleshooting steps?

  1. Run SFC & DISM Scans: Open Command Prompt as Admin and run sfc /scannow, then Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth to repair system files.
  2. Update/Reinstall Apps: update it or uninstall the game, restart, then reinstall it.

Please do let me know the outcome after preforming our recommendation.

If you have any questions, please let us know. Thank you.

Best regards,

Hi Jed,

I have the same problem with 4070ti, with Vulkan game crashes, with DX12, game freezes and after 10-20 seconds the picture comes back with a loading screen (spinning wheels), and then shadering starts again and game continues and this repeats 5-6 times per 15 minutes like.

Even doing any of this topic mentioned, any of the internet informations, clean installs and so on, this keeps going on and on. I am wondering if the problem is about the latest nvidia graphics card driver, but  I don't like to reqind updates...

All the others are same as Grinou.

Looking forward to your reply,

Dart

This effects many of the players through many games not just POE2.
