Windows does not select the correct GPU.

Hello everyone, how are you? Well, I've been having this problem for a while and ignoring it, but today I decided to try and solve it, or at least document it. I'll share my setup for informational purposes.

AMD Ryzen 5 8500g

Asus TUF GAMING B650M-E WIFI

32GB of RAM (2x16) 5200MHz XPG Lancer

MSI Mag A750GL Power Supply

Intel Arc B580 Asrock Steel Legend

Windows 11 24h2

Okay, let's get to the point. I use the video cable on the motherboard so I can also use the integrated graphics of my 8500g, which is extremely important and useful to me. However, some games don't recognize my ARC B580 and keep using my integrated graphics to run the game, no matter what I do, whether it's changing the graphics settings to determine which GPU I want a particular app to use, putting it in high-performance mode, etc. I've noticed this in some games: Borderlands 2, Forza Horizon 3, and One Piece Odyssey (if you can suggest a test, please let it be Borderlands 2). If I switch the video cable to the dedicated GPU and disable the integrated graphics in the BIOS, the game will run correctly on the ARC B580, but as I said, having the integrated graphics working simultaneously is extremely useful to me, and this is a problem that should be solved. Well, I think that's it, I really don't have much more to say. I've tried everything, believe me, I've searched the internet from top to bottom for something that helps. The only thing I haven't done is reinstall my entire Windows, which I definitely don't want to do. I'm accepting suggestions and help, but keep in mind that I've already tried obvious solutions. I will also open a support ticket on the microsoft help site, if you want to follow up there as well. I believe that if Intel and Microsoft work together to fix it, they will certainly succeed.

Hi cabeswater,

Thank you for posting in our Community. I completely understand why you’d want both your integrated and dedicated GPUs active, that flexibility can be incredibly useful for multitasking and optimizing performance. I’m not entirely certain, but this issue may be connected to how Windows manages GPU selection between your Ryzen 5 8500G’s integrated Radeon graphics and the Intel Arc B580. Let’s try to narrow it down a bit:

  1. Could you please confirm if GPU switching works correctly in non-gaming applications (for example, video editing software or benchmarks like 3DMark or Unigine Heaven)?
  2. Have you already tried disabling MPO (Multiplane Overlay) or Graphics Hardware Scheduling (HAGS) in Windows? These settings sometimes interfere with hybrid GPU setups.
  3. Which driver versions are currently installed for both the AMD iGPU and the Intel Arc GPU? (You can check this in Device Manager > Display Adapters > Properties > Driver tab.)
  4. When you launch Borderlands 2 or Forza Horizon 3, could you confirm whether they appear under Task Manager > GPU Engine as running on the Intel GPU or the integrated one?

Additionally, I'd like to delve deeper and verify specifics like the graphics models, precise driver versions, and any system errors. Utilizing the Intel SSU tool will enable me to collect detailed information about your system setup, which could aid in identifying the underlying cause of this issue.

Have a nice day!

Hi Von! How are you?

First of all, I wanted to change some things I said above; actually, it's Borderlands 3 that's not working. And to test, I'm using One Piece Odyssey, okay?

Intel driver: 8247 (latest).

AMD driver: 25.9.1 (not the latest, but honestly, I've been having these problems for months and I always changed the driver, so I doubt it will change anything with the newer one).

I tested with MPO and HAGS disabled, nothing changed.

I ran the SSU tool.

I will attach a screenshot of the game and my task manager, and the SSU .txt file.

Hi cabeswater,

Thank you for contacting Intel Technical Support regarding the GPU selection issue you're experiencing with your Intel Arc B580 and AMD Ryzen 5 8500G integrated graphics. I understand you want to maintain both GPUs active for their respective benefits, but certain games are defaulting to the integrated graphics instead of utilizing your Arc B580.

I appreciate the detailed system information you've provided:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 8500g with integrated graphics
  • Intel Arc B580 Asrock Steel Legend
  • 32GB DDR4 5200MHz RAM
  • Windows 11 24H2
  • Intel driver 8247 (latest)
  • AMD driver 25.9.1

I also see that you've already tested with MPO and HAGS disabled, and you've provided the SSU report along with task manager screenshots. I note that you mentioned Borderlands 3 specifically as one of the problematic games.

Before I proceed with analysis, I'd like to focus on Borderlands 3 and gather some additional information about your graphics game settings. Please provide a screenshot.

This information will help me provide more targeted troubleshooting steps for your hybrid GPU configuration, particularly for Borderlands 3.

Best regards,

Hello, As I mentioned in my second message, I'd like to continue testing with One Piece, if possible. Borderlands 3 is very large (100 GB) and I only have a measly 500 GB; I can't simply leave it idle for testing. However, when I downloaded it, changing the settings to high, medium, or low didn't affect anything, only the performance of the integrated GPU, obviously. And this also applies to other games. I couldn't answer before about whether it was possible to switch GPUs in other apps, so to answer: yes, it is possible and works perfectly, changing through the graphics settings in Windows.

Hello cabeswater,

Thank you for clarifying and for sharing those additional details. That definitely helps narrow down the situation. I completely understand your preference to continue testing with One Piece Odyssey. That's perfectly fine. I’ll need to conduct some additional research on this issue to determine why the game continues to default to the integrated GPU even when the Intel® Arc™ GPU is set as high performance. Once I have more information or possible next steps, I’ll post an update in this thread right away.

Have a nice day!

Hello cabeswater,

Thank you for your patience in this matter. To help me better understand and investigate this behavior, could you please share or create a clear set of steps I can follow to reproduce the issue on my end?

For example, you may include information such as:

  • How the display cables are connected (which port and device).

  • The specific graphics settings or changes made before launching the affected games.

  • The exact moment or action at which the game defaults to the integrated graphics.

Having a reproducible scenario will allow me to test the situation accurately and coordinate further if needed. I appreciate your cooperation and the effort you’re putting into helping us resolve this.

Have a nice day!

Hello, yes I can! Here's how:

You will need a processor with integrated graphics (I only used the 8500g so I don't know if it works on others).
An Intel ARC B580 (I believe from any manufacturer).
Windows 24/7.
DisplayPort cable on the motherboard (the HDMI cable doesn't change anything, the problem persists).
In the BIOS, whether I set it to hybrid graphics or not, the problem continues and both GPUs remain active.
Changing the Windows graphics settings to high performance mode or not won't change anything (but I leave it on high performance with the B580 selected). Power mode on maximum performance.
AMD driver: 25.9.1 (but changing the version doesn't change anything, at least for me).
Intel: 8247 (changing it doesn't change anything either).
The game is One Piece Odyssey.

In-game settings don't change anything, so it doesn't matter much whether you set them to ultra or low.
The issue appears as soon as you click to start the game; instantly, the integrated GPU resources start being used, and the B580 shows 0% or 1% usage on some random Windows screens.

I believe that would be the step-by-step process; there's not much to change. For me, it's an unavoidable problem. The only way to solve it would be by disabling the integrated graphics in the BIOS and connecting the video cable to the dedicated graphics card.

I await the results. If you need more details or help, let me know. Good luck!

Hello, initially Minecraft was also having this problem. I didn't want the hassle, so I just turned off the integrated graphics and continued playing Minecraft.
