We are designing a portable, battery powered object detector running fast RCNN or SSD (600x600) and need recommendations. We have tried the RPi 3B+ with one and two NCS 2s but only achieve 2-3FPS, and we need ~15FPS. We have read about the RPi CPU and USB 2.0 limitations. There are many SBC option, does anyone have a strong recommendation?

We have tested with i.mx6 via pcie to usb 3.0 interface see my previous post and the results aren't bad. The main challenge is reducing the power consumption so that battery operation is possible. With NCS2 we are seeing power consumption of around 350mA for peak performance. There are possibilities to reduce this down further.
