First off I want to ask if my version 10.1 intel fortran compiler will work fine with the new Nehalem processors. Second, anyrecommendations(for performance/dollar) on the new Mac Pros? Thanks in advance!

We are getting good results with ifort 10.1 on Xeon 5500 or Core i7 on linux (impossible to mention without violating Intel marketing requirements). If your license is current, you are encouraged to try both that and newer versions.
I don't know anyone with an inside track to competitively priced Macs.

thank you or the reply. I guess I should have specifically stated 4 core (2.6GHz) at $2500 or 8 core (2.26GHz) at $ 3300.

You may wish to read through a similar, recent post:

If you have a 10.1 compiler, make sure it is a recent one as Nehalem support was added later in the 10.1 lifecycle.

With an effectively parallelized application which uses 8 cores, or ones which take advantage of the larger memory capacity, the dual socket version may be worth while. It 's easier to find applications scaling well to 4 cores than to 8.
At such a price, you expect some fancy accessories like video and sound, which should be effective on the single socket platform.
