Configure problems for netcdf 3.6.2 with ifort on Mac Leopard

The configure step is failing with the following message:

checking if Fortran "byte" is C "signed char"... configure: error: Could not link conftestf.o and conftest.o

I am using ifort 10.1.012 on a Mac with Leopard installed.

Any suggestions?
