How to run the MS LIB command line tool in Win 8.1?

The subject line says it all.

I recently upgraded from XP to 8.1. In XP, I used the Start menu to navigate as follows

START > All Programs > Intel Parallel Studio > Command Prompt > Parallel Studio XE with... > IA32 Visual Studio 2010 Mode

and put a shortcut to that on my desktop. Double clicking on it opened a command window from which typing LIB gave access to the tool.

This doesn't work in Windows 8.1

Works for me in Win8.1. Show the output from when the window opens through your attempt to use LIB.

The problem is to get the window open. Win 8.1 doesn't have a start menu like previous versions, so there is no way to perform the navigation string I showed.

What I probably need is a new set of instructions, starting from scratch.

I always use a desktop shortcut for the Intel command line window, along with StartButton8.  There are command line shortcuts in the Apps menu under the Intel headings (now that 8.1 updates have instituted headings), even if you do no more than install the compilers.  Admittedly, it seems black magic that the most recently installed update appears in the shortcut window, and PATH is a mess.

I would find it confusing to have IA32 compilers installed in Win8.

Yeah, this is a bit tricky. You can open the applications list, right click on the entry and pin it to the taskbar, but getting that to the desktop is harder. Let me play with my Win8.1 system tonight (it's at home) and I'll get the steps.

Tim, my Win8.1 system is 32-bit only, so it isn't confusing at all... (It's a 2008 Dell Mini 9 with an Atom N270.) "PATH is a mess"?

On my work Win8 system (we don't get 8.1 yet), I use Start8 and that makes it easy.

"...open the applications list, right click on the entry..."

What "entry"? I think if I could find an entry that led to the same place as the navigation path in my original message--i.e. a command window in which typing LIB actually did something--then I could take it from there OK.

Let me take a screenshot of what I saw on my system and I'll provide the details. I did get this to work last night.

Ok, here is what works for me.

Left click in on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen. For me this brings up "Apps". Change the sort to "by category" (dropdown to the right of "Apps".) Scroll to category Intel Parallel Studio XE 2013. One (or two) of the icons under that will be the command prompt shortcut ("IA-32 Visual Studio 2010 mode", for example.) RIGHT click on that, select Open file location. Now you are back on the desktop with a normal folder window open showing the shortcut. Right-click drag this to your desktop and select Copy here. Done.
