IA-32 Subset Packages for Smaller Downloads

For the upcoming 9.0.025 update, we're trying something new in an attempt to address a common complaint - that our download packages are too large. In addition to the regular "full" package, which contains compilers and tools for all three platforms, we will also offer an IA-32-only subset package which will contain only the compilers and tools meant for building IA-32 applications on IA-32 systems. These packages will have _IA32 in the filename, for example, w_fc_c_9.0.025_IA32.exe.

The subset package contains the IA-32 compiler, IA-32 Intel Debugger, IA-32 Array Visualizer and the IDE integration. It does not include the compiler for Intel EM64T nor the native Itanium compiler. (It does include the Itanium cross-compiler, which for now is bundled with the IA-32 compiler.)

This is an experiment and a first step towards making it easier to download our compiler products, and we'd appreciate your comments and observations. You can reply here or send comments to Intel Premier Support as you choose. We have some other ideas we are looking at for the longer term, but this was something we could implement quickly and which we thought would provide a significant benefit.

Depending on customer feedback, we may extend this concept to packages specifically for the other platforms, and to further modularize the downloads.

The subset is available now in Intel Premier Support File Downloads, but it does not show in "What's New" and a notice of it has not yet been sent out. If this subset is appropriate for you, please try it out and let us know what you think.

Looks fine, works fine, and loads more fast. Right direction.

I tried it and had no problems. The download is definitely faster.

The one problem, if you can call it that, is that all the documentation and instructions still refer to the original full downloads that have the EMT64 and Itanium material in them. That could be a source of confusion, but it would be a big job to edit everything and take the extra material out.
