Car Talk gives good answers too. Why don't you give Tom and Ray a call and see what they advise.

Hello, first sorry but my English is really bad 'cause my
native language is Spanish... but I will try to help you.
I have the 945GNT motherboard and I have the same problem, IDU report me
"Service program in not active". After a few days thinking about the
problem I found the cause in my case (I don't found any solution in the web).
Cause: my Norton firewall was
blocking the access for the AdminWorks Agent program (This file is in
IntelIDU folder and his name is AwServ.exe).
Solution: Grant access for this application.
Result: Intel Desktop Utilities
works fine.
Then check your firewall settings, I hope this solution works for you too.
Bye

Every link regarding the error message"service program is not active" when I try & start the "Intel desktop utilities" brings me back to this forum. I am not the only one experiencing this problem.
Plse advise.
