I intend to install Windows 7 to replace Windows XP on my desktop and notebook computers. I have two questions:
1. I remember to have read in this forum that CVF will not work on Windows 7 anymore. Is that correct?
2. IVF 11.1 is running with VS2005 on WinXP. Has anyone encountered problems with this combination under Windows 7?
Thanks for your answers.

I don't recall anyone saying that CVF didn't work on Windows 7, though as on Vista, you probably have to start Developer Studio "as Administrator"
We recommend VS2008 on Windows 7, though I know of no reason why VS2005, following the instructions for Vista in the IVF Release Notes, shouldn't work. 11.1 includes VS2008 Shell and Libraries.

i'd also recommend NOT upgrading an exisiting machine.
you know Windows 7 does not inherit ANY of your current settings.
It will be the same as getting a new machine.
So why not just get a new box with Windows 7?
see
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2009/101609-windows-7-dont-upgrade-buy.html
the way i figure it, a new box might be $300-$500 with windows 7 installed and extra bonus of tons of memory and disk space and faster chipset.
and while transitioning from your exisiting box or boxes, you are still fully functional with your existing setup.
so no down time. you move to windows 7'at your leisure'.
Idivide the amount of cash for a new box by the hours of head & heart ache of all that transitioning and 'oh crap what have i done and gotten myself into' time when your exisitingbox turnsto toast and while you try to figure out 'what went wrong' and reboot, reshuffle, stand on your head, whistle dixie, and all the various tricks to get things back up and running, and I find it'll come down to 'what hourly rate do you value your sanity at?'
The cost of a new box is relatively cheap when thought of that way!

I installed CVF on my desktop with Windows 7 system (32 bit, German). V6.1 was installed successfully. When I tried to upgrade to V6.5 by using the original CD, I received the error message (translated) "PATCHW32.dll missing". Has anyone a suggestion how that problem can be fixed?

That DLL should be in the temp folder where the upgrade unpacks. You could use a ZIP utility such as 7Zip or WinZip to unpack manually.

Sorry, that was my fault: I misunderstood what Steve meant by "install CVF as administrator". I assumed that installing CVF from an account with administrator privileges would suffice. I was not aware that there is a difference in Windows 7 between to just "open" a file and " open as an administrator". When I opened all the setup files in the install sequence with "open as an administrator", I finally managed to install CVF V6.6C3. I still get a message when I request the compilation of a source program that CVF/VS has known incompatiblities.
Reporting my stupidity might help others to avoid that trap. I cannot help to make my usual remark: I still use CVF for my largest project because the source browser missing in IVF is a great tool.
PS. It's time to send CVF to retirement and switch completely to IVF. After four or five builds with CVF under Windows 7 Visual Studio stopped working at all. I am tired to look for the reason and give up. I hope that the people at Intel get the time to work on a nice source browser with at least the functionality which was present in CVF.
