I haven't been able to find anything on this; is there such a thing as Fortran compiler for OpenVMS/Itanium? Or, should we use the Compaq compiler that works on Alpha? How does performance compare on say OpenVMS/Itanium 2 versus WinXP/Core 2?

Yes, there is. You can read about it at http://www.hp.com/go/fortran and click on the link for "Fortran for HP OpenVMS Integrity". You'll have to ask HP about performance claims. This compiler is derived in part from the Alpha compiler and uses the HP code generator rather than Intel's. It is a "cousin" of today's Intel Fortran but the sources forked some years ago.
