Problem installing : Windows Installer Service

Every time I try to install Visual Fortran Composer XE 2011 Windows (the evaluation version) I get the following error message.

"Error while installing package w_cprof_ide_p_12.0.104. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed."

I've tried this mutiple times with the same error message. I've tried reinstalling Windows Installer and redownloading the setup program. I've also tried this on another machine and get the same error so I don't think it's my computer.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Well, the message suggests that the Windows Installer service is corrupted. See if this MSKB article helps. Which Windows version are you running (and with which service packs, if any)?

Well, unless Windows installer is corrupted on two different computers it's hard to believe that is the problem. Also, over the weekend I tried the installation on a third computer and it worked. The differences between the first two machines I tried and the third machine is that the first two (that didn't work) have Windows XP SP3 with Visual Studio 2005 and the third machine (that did work) has Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2010.

In addition, there is another computer with Windows XP SP3 that has Visual Fortran running at my office. It has Visual Studio 2008.

Also, the Visual Fortran suite will install fine if I choose options that don't require Visual Studio integration.

All of this leads me to believe it is an issue with the Visual Studio 2005 integration.

I have this compiler integrated into VS2005 ok. Try this experiment - do a modify on the install, remove the Parallel Debugger Extensions feature and add in VS2005 integration.

Thanks for trying to help me with this problem. Unfortunately, what you suggested didn't produce any change in the result. I tried installing only the 32 bit compiler (I downloaded the 32 and 64 bit compilers) with VS integration and turned everything else off. I still get the same error message. I'll be heading out of town in about 10 minutes so I may not be able to try anything else until this evening.

You may have some sort of update or third-party product installed in both machines that causes a problem. But I'm out of ideas and suggest you file this with Intel Premier Support.
