Problems installing 15.0

I'm having great difficulty installing this version, and when I tried to submit the report to Premier Support, got the very helpful "an error occurred while submitting your request."

The error I got was:

Intel(R) Parallel Studio XE 2015 Professional Edition for Fortran Windows* Setup Wizard ended prematurely because of an error(s).
  Windows Installer failed to configure product:
    Error message: Error 1. Could not open key: 2.  System error 3.  Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
    Error code: 1603
    Product code: 1B4DEC76-1092-4086-A7F9-BE5CB3A819E6
    Module name: parallel_studio_xe_2015_setup

I have already tried uninstalling my old versions without any further progress.

David, sorry to hear about the problems. Thanks for the log files - I'll pass these on to the developers. Which installer did you try - online or full? Try the other one.

I was able to install using the full installers for ifort and icl, where the parallel studio installer failed with no messages, and I didn't know where to look for logs.

Just responding to your question - this was the full installer.  I used the same downloaded copy to install onto my work computer, but my install on my computer at home is totally trashed, with no apparent recovery, even after uninstalling all of the previous versions on the machine.

What do you mean by "totally trashed, with no apparent recovery"? Do you get the same errors when you try to reinstall? Did you try the online installer?

You can also try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove remnants of the older install.

I was unable to install the new version while the older versions were installed.

The old install also became corrupted and could not be repaired or uninstalled, so I had to manually delete it, and do a registry clean up.

The v15 install reports the errors above, and cannot continue.

I'll try the Windows Installer Cleanup to see it that solves it.

The developers looked at your log and found that there was something corrupted in the registry when it tried to remove the old version's VS integration. The Cleanup Utility often helps, as it did here, but they also suggested that you could have also rerun the old version's installer to remove it. Maybe this will help someone else if they run into it.

For those of you who have install problems, including the install exiting, please provide a ZIP of the files in:

%temp%\pset_tmp_PSXE2015_*\*.*
%temp%\pset_tmp_ComposerXE2015_*\*.*

when you submit your problem report.

You may not have both of these folders.

After the corruption was found while attempting to instal XE 2015, I think it broke the 2013 files, so that repair/reinstall didn't work.  Not sure if that is exactly what happened now.  Whether I contributed to the mess or not, the cleanup eventually got me out of it!

I've learned about the logs.  Parallel Studio installer is failing on account of finding multiple broken versions of VTune which it doesn't know how to remove.  I haven't learned the next step; maybe an uninstaller hint which Steve gave would help, but I can't find it by search engine.

I have several questions for when and if I come across the same problem(s) (I am not going to try 2015 until it goes quiet around here!)

What is the clean-up utility?
Where can it be obtained?
Does it involve manually deleting or clearing data from registry keys?

How does the 'old' (or for that matter, any) version's installer remove/repair things?
Is that an option that will magically appear after using it for the first time to install a version of the compiler?
Do you have to approach it via the usual Add/remove programs option in control panel?
Or do you just click on the MSI file?

As hinted on the URL referral, the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility is blocked by Windows 8.1.  There are even older versions available which state on the screen they are intended for win95/98.

I'm somewhat perplexed, as the entire 15.0 beta version of Parallel Studio appeared to be working in the presence of the stale references to old versions of VTune.  I could remove both the beta and the 2013 update versions of Parallel Studio, but the block against full removal or re-installation of VTune 2013 persists.

In the analogous situation on linux, running all the vtune uninstall scripts, followed by laboriously deleting remaining rpmdb references to vtune, enabled Parallel Studio 15.0 to install.  So I am tempted to think it may be a problem with stale registry entries on Windows.

The cleanup utility was written by Microsoft and it finds install references in the registry and removes them - it may not remove files. I wasn't aware that Windows 8.1 blocks it.

To rerun the old installer, just run the install EXE. You may need to download it again if you don't have a local copy.

There is a paid utility on TuCows which claims to support removal of VTune and other applications on OS including win8.1.  I may try it if no other suggestions come along, but the free version isn't seeing the troublesome versions of VTune, so I'm not convinced.

The Intel installer which I was advised by an Intel expert to try simply says its version of VTune is already present, and quits. The next installer which I used at one time sees both the oldest version, which it says it will delete, but then it quits because it also sees its own version already installed. The 15.0 beta version, which seemed to install and remove successfully, also has left traces of itself somewhere which I don't yet understand.
