Refreshing windows while running Fortran code

I am calling a Fortran subroutine(in a DLL) from a Visual Basic program. If any of the windows generated by the Visual Basic program, are obscured for any reason, such as a drag over or a screen saver blanking, they do not get repainted while the Fortran code is being executed. This is a problem since the Fortran code executes for a long period of time. How do I correct this behaviour?
