Hi,
I purchased XE 2013 and now I would like to upgrade to XE 2016. Since the one-year license of the earlier version is already expired, I am not sure if I renew the license with post-expiry would work to upgrade to 2016 version or I should buy 2016 version. Generally speaking, will the license for earlier versions be valid for newer versions too (if not expired)? I found commercial info in the link below:

Regards,
Hamidreza,

License renewal entitles you to use all versions released within 1 year of your renewal date (the date of expiration of your current license). If your license expired more than a year ago, paying retroactively for multiple years of renewal might be more expensive than a fresh license.

Last year we changed the way we do renewals. You get the best price if you renew before support expiration. For up to one year after that you can still get a discount, but a smaller one. After that you have to buy a new license. See https://software.intel.com/en-us/faq/purchasing-renewing-upgrading#renew-vs-new for more details.
