I am using Compaq Fortran 6.5A on a Windows XP dual processor IBM Intellistation. Periodically, when I set a breakpoint in the Fortran code and debug, the system becomes nearly non-responsive. I'll click on the stop debug button and wait for several minutes before the debug process stops. Once the debug session ends, the system is responsive again. The system does not usually become unresponsive until I hit the first breakpoint.
A colleague reported a similar problem on his Windows 2000 workstation (similar hardware), but the problem was not as pervasive.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Fred

Do you have Office XP and the "Office Language Bar" or "Alternative User Input Text Input Processor" enabled? This starts a background program called CTFMON.EXE that is known to cause this symptom. See here for information on disabling it.
