VS 2003 File red check Icon Meaning?

Just installed IVF 10, Win XP, with VS 2003 integration. In the Visual Studio Solution Explorer pane, under source files, the left side file icon shows a small red check (barely visible) for a few but not all of my project source files.

What is this?

A quick search of the VS help suggest file source control, but I do not use that.

I've seen this on occasion but did not know what caused it. Recently I changed the compile settings for one source file and the check appeared for that file. So perhaps it means that that file has customized build settings.
