Seeking Network Performance Advice

I have a backup server that is running Win2003 Std and has a Dual port Intel Pro/1000mt card. I am trying to increase its network performance to backup jobs that are on a NAS. Does anyone have recommendations? Currently, one port is disabled because when it was enabled, throughput fell. I'm in the process of updating the driver and investigating bridging the two ports. Pls help.

What has that to do with this thread? Core 2 Duo is current Intel dual core CPU, 64-bit capable. The desktop version is also sold in servers as Xeon (original code name Conroe).
